Elon Musk says Tesla will start utilizing the inward-facing cabin camera to detect occupants. And if the camera detects passengers, Tesla will keep the car “on” for entertainment & comfort even if the driver has locked the car and walked away.

Tesla has been at the forefront of introducing safety features in its vehicles, including the use of cabin cameras to monitor drivers and ensure that they are keeping their eyes on the road when using Tesla's autopilot.

Tesla's emphasis on safety is reflected in its vehicles' safety ratings. The Model Y, for example, received a 5-star rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Tesla believes that the unique combination of passive safety, active safety, and automated driver assistance is crucial for keeping not just Tesla drivers and passengers safe, but all drivers on the road.

Tesla's commitment to safety is also evident in its introduction of "Dog Mode" in 2019. Dog Mode is a feature that keeps the car at a pet-safe temperature while the owner is away. When activated, the feature displays a message on the car's screen that reads, "My owner will be back soon. Don't worry! The A/C is on and it's [temperature] degrees." This message is intended to reassure passersby that the pet is safe and not in danger.

However, if a person doesn’t explicitly activate “Dog Mode” the vehicle will still turn off if the driver walks away with the key, and that is whether or not a passenger is left in the car. A Twitter user named Tesla Diva tweeted at Elon Musk with this exact problem saying that she left her teenager and a little child in the car while she went into a store, and the car shut off.

Continuing Tesla Diva added her oldest child had to touch the screen to turn it back on, and she expressed concern that if an infant was left in the car, it would shut down. She asked if Tesla could do something to detect people in the car and keep the temperature on.

Elon Musk responded to Tesla Diva's tweet, saying that Tesla car temperature is automatically kept within a safe range, even when the car appears "off," to protect infants and pets. However, Musk acknowledged that “it would be more convenient to keep the car “on” for entertainment & comfort if the [cabin] camera detects occupants.”

Musk finally added that Tesla will be making this change and lucky for Tesla owners, the EV maker will be making this change and rolling it out to owners through an over-the-air update.

This is not the first time Elon Musk has taken suggestions from Twitter users and used them to improve Tesla vehicles. And even more impressively, Tesla implements these changes relatively quickly following Musk’s promise.
