A Cybertruck owner reports that his truck sent and received 940 gigabytes of data in just one month, causing him to exceed his 1.28 terabyte internet cap. Interestingly, he notes that his wife’s Model 3 used only 2.5 GB of data during the same time frame.

Ben is a Cybertruck owner from Orange County, California, and says he was surprised to see his monthly internet data usage suddenly spike after bringing his Cybertruck home.
The owner, who goes by the username CyberT, states that he is a light internet user and typically never comes close to reaching the 1.28 terabyte monthly data cap set by his internet service provider.
However, in the past three months, Ben has exceeded his monthly internet data usage limit twice.
Surprised by this sudden spike in internet usage, CyberT investigated what was happening and shared his findings on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum.
He writes…
“I'm trying to understand how and why my Cybertruck uses so much data.
I've never come close to using up the 1.28TB Data cap on my COX ISP plan. But since getting my truck in November, I've gone over 2 of the three billing cycles.”
To his surprise, Ben reports that he checked his data usage, and, lo and behold, the Cybertruck transmitted 940 gigabytes of data in just one month.
He continues to write…
“I looked at my Internet traffic and which client was using what over the last 30 days, and I was shocked to see 940GB of data usage from my Cybertruck.”
Finally, Ben concludes his post by asking if anyone in the Cybertruck community can explain why the Cybertruck was using so much data.
He writes…
“Does anyone know why the Cybertruck is using so much data? Is there a setting I should be unchecking?”
Below his post, CyberT shared several screenshots of his internet usage over the past 30 days.
In the graph he provided, there are several distinct spikes in internet usage and CyberT states…
“In the screenshot, the spikes are from when there has been an update on the Cybertruck”
What’s interesting here is that Ben’s wife, Genie, has a Tesla, specifically a Model 3, and her data usage is nowhere near her husband’s.
During the same 30 days that Ben’s Cybertruck downloaded and uploaded 940 gigabytes, Genei’s Model 3 only utilized 2.5 GB of data.
This means that the Cybertruck transmits and receives more than 375 times the amount of data as the Tesla Model 3.
Given Tesla's aim to create the first completely autonomous vehicle, a lot of people might instinctively think that the substantial data usage is linked to Tesla transmitting driving video footage to the company for training its full self-driving AI.
However, it’s still interesting why there is this much disparity in data usage between the Cybertruck and the Model 3.
Thankfully, looking at the comments, fellow Cybertruck owners were able to explain to Ben why his truck uses significantly more data than his wife’s Model 3.
A fellow Cybertruck owner from Michigan rightfully points out that Ben has enabled autopilot data sharing, which is the reason for the high data usage.

In response, Ben writes that he had unknowingly enabled autopilot data sharing.
