Here are 12 models Consumer Reports analysts report that have proven themselves capable of reaching at least 200,000 miles and more in many cases where owners followed one key bit of advice.
CR automotive experts tell us that a recent delve into car ownership surveys filled out by Consumer Report’s customers, revealed 12 models of cars proven capable of reaching significantly more miles during their lifetime than that of most other makes and models.
The 200,000 Mile Club
All of us know at least one car owner that has earned the bragging rights of owning a car that has passed the 200,000-mile mark. “Earned” because although some makes and models excel in reliability that should ensure success of reaching that milestone, just as important is the fact that the car has to have been well-maintained with regularly scheduled fluid changes and immediate attention paid to minor problems that crop up before they become big problems.

According to a recent Consumer Reports newsletter:
Almost any car can make it to 200,000 miles and beyond if you spend enough money on it. The better strategy is to start with a model that has proven to be safe, scored high in our road tests, has a strong reliability track record, and has been properly maintained. This put the odds on your side for a long, happy ownership experience. Just make sure you follow the maintenance schedule in your owner’s manual and take care of minor problems as they arise.
Those That Made the List
To be sure, many models not on their list can achieve 200,000 miles or further; however, did not make the CR cut because overall they are not among those found to have a reputation of being trouble-free vehicles.

That said, here is a summary of the list of those that made the cut that are guaranteed to be a smart and long-lasting purchase as long as the owner takes the time and effort to ensure periodic maintenance and are quick to notice and remedy problems as they occur.
However, be sure to pay special attention to their individual “Predicted reliability” and “Predicted owner satisfaction” scores that could make a difference in your car buying decisions.
