According to Yaman Tasdivar, Tesla vision is superior to ultrasonic sensors and gives 10 reasons why. Here they are.
1. Greater Precision:
Tesla Vision relies on cameras that provide high-resolution imagery, offering more detailed and precise information about the vehicle's surroundings compared to the limited resolution of ultrasonic sensors.
I do agree that as time goes on, the vision system will be much more precise and provide greater and greater detail and precision as software evolves and cameras improve.
2. Enhanced Object Recognition:
Cameras in Tesla Vision can recognize and classify objects more effectively, distinguishing between different types of obstacles, pedestrians, and vehicles, contributing to improved decision-making by the vehicle's autonomous systems.
This is true and goes hand in hand with software and camera updates. As these improve, the system will get better and better are recognizing the real world and everything in it.This makes it easier to give alerts or warnings on what to do and also show them on the screen.
3. Adaptive Imaging:
Cameras can adapt to different lighting conditions, including low light and adverse weather, allowing Tesla Vision to maintain functionality in a broader range of environments compared to ultrasonics that may struggle in certain conditions.
With better and better cameras, this will become a reality. I'm not aware of any improvements to ultrasonic sensors that will do this.
4. 360-Degree View:
Tesla Vision's cameras can cover a full 360-degree field of view around the vehicle, providing a comprehensive and continuous stream of data. Ultrasonics have limited coverage and may have blind spots.
The 360 birds eye view is a very nice upgrade to the vision system. This is just the first version, and I'm looking forward to future versions from Tesla.
5. Lane-Keeping and Autopilot Precision:
Cameras play a crucial role in Tesla's Autopilot and Full Self-Driving capabilities, offering precise lane-keeping and navigation based on real-time visual information, contributing to smoother and more accurate driving.
Tesla Autopilot does very well in clear weather, however, there will need to be solutions in place to manage it when there is a lot of rain, snow, ice, fog, or mud.

6. Object Tracking:
Tesla Vision can track moving objects more effectively, predicting their trajectories and adjusting the vehicle's behavior accordingly. This is particularly important for autonomous driving in dynamic traffic scenarios.
Yes, the vision system will help Tesla with their advanced safety features - which will save lives, in a way that ultrasonic sensors just cannot do. The range of ultrasonic sensors is very short.
7. Cost Efficiency:
Cameras are generally more cost-effective to produce and maintain compared to an array of ultrasonic sensors. This could potentially contribute to lower manufacturing costs for Tesla vehicles.
Yes, I like this one! Saving money and reducing complexity and time is good.
8. Software Updates:
Tesla Vision can benefit from regular software updates, allowing continuous improvement of its capabilities. This flexibility is not as easily achieved with traditional hardware-based systems like ultrasonics.
Over time, the vision system should get better than what a human can see.
9. Reduced Complexity:
Relying on cameras for vision systems can simplify the overall sensor architecture of the vehicle. This reduction in complexity can contribute to easier maintenance and potentially fewer points of failure.
I like not having the ultrasonic sensors as something the software needs to care about.
10. Versatility:
Cameras can be strategically placed on the vehicle for optimal coverage, offering versatility in design and placement compared to ultrasonic sensors, which may be more constrained in their positioning.
It would be good for Tesla to place cameras directly on the front bumper to give better creeping visibility. I'd also like to see them on the very back bumper as well.
One disadvantage of using the vision system is that if the cameras get foggy, blurry, muddy, or have anything happen that distorts the vision, the system breaks down and doesn't work. An ultrasonic sensor can still be blocked by a lot of snow and mud, but it's a lot harder to do than to get a camera to be blurry. Tesla needs an automated camera cleaning solution.
There are just 10 reasons that shows Tesla vision being superior to ultrasonic sensors. My favorite is the cost savings and simplicity of making a Tesla vehicle now.

All good points, but I would personally feel safer ALSO having a radar looking out into the distance beyond the headlights to look for large objects in my intended pathway that I’m hurling towards at 50+ miles per hour. I know you aren’t supposed to overdrive your headlights, but would be glad to have the technological ‘backup’.

Isn't it funny how there's now articles claiming superiority when current Tesla drivers just wanted a classical 360 degree representation that Nissan had more than a decade ago and Mercedes Benz offers for it's higher levels.. the same Merc that owns 10% by investing $50m when Tesla was valued at $500m. Don't be a cheapskate, Elon, and pay for the license fee to install a 360 that just works :)

Wasn’t removing the ultrasonic sensors really a way to deal with supply chain issues and lowering cost and stream lining production?
The cameras may get better over time. I expect they will if enough time, effort and money are put into their continued development and into keeping the cameras clear and unobstructed during bad weather.
