6 Month Pause on AI

With the latest petition asking that AI development of systems beyond ChatGPT4 be paused for 6 months so that proper thought and care can be given, does this mean that Tesla should pause development on its full self-driving software and its Tesla Bot (humanoid robot)?

Elon Musk and others are asking for a pause on AI development, citing concerns and risks. Should Tesla also heed this call and pause its FSD and Tesla Bot AI development?

We know that Elon Musk is one of the most outspoken proponents of artificial intelligence (AI). He has warned repeatedly about the danger of AI in the future, and that it is the thing that keeps him up the most at night.

He has said that AI is humanity's "biggest existential threat" and that we need to "take care" with its development. In recent weeks, Musk has been joined by other tech leaders in calling for a pause on AI development. These leaders cite concerns about the potential for AI to be used for malicious purposes or just doing things nobody can predict.

Should Tesla Adhere to a Pause?

Tesla is one of the leading companies in the development of self-driving cars, despite what you might hear in the news. The company's FSD (Full Self-Driving) system is currently in beta testing and is available to hundreds of thousands of Tesla owners. The system is designed to allow Tesla cars to drive themselves on highways and city streets.

However, the system is not yet autonomous, but is being designed to be autonomous anywhere in the world. Some argue that this software is dangerous.

Tesla is also developing a humanoid robot called the Tesla Bot. The robot is designed to be capable of performing a variety of tasks, such as picking up and carrying objects, opening doors, and interacting with humans.

However, there are concerns that the Tesla Bot could be used for malicious purposes, such as carrying out attacks or stealing things from people.

Should Tesla Pause FSD and Tesla Bot AI Development?

Tesla FSD is an autonomous software system that is solely designed to drive on the road and nothing else. Tesla has taken great care in making this safe, with a cabin camera and warnings on the center screen. Tesla makes it clear that the driver must take over, just like with any other driver assisted system available today.

Tesla Bot is in its early stages and is shown carrying around parts for other Tesla Bots or watering plants. This doesn't seem to be a problem today and if Tesla constrains it to a set of tasks and can prove that it can't go out of the boundaries of those tasks, then I don't see why this needs to be paused.

In my opinion, Tesla should not have to pause its AI development because it has been shown to be safe with careful safeguards.

There is a lack of regulation of AI. There are currently no laws or regulations governing the development and use of AI. This lack of regulation could lead to the development of AI systems that are unsafe or harmful. That is the bigger issue here, and I think the biggest reason a pause is being asked for.

Do you think Tesla should pause its AI development?
