There is recent news from the Turkish President and Saudi Arabia that Tesla may build a gigafactory in one of these locations.

Tesla Gigafactory in Saudi Arabia

Reports from multiple news sources say that Tesla is in talks with Saudi Arabia - early talks - for building a Gigafactory there, according to sources familiar with the matter.

Elon Musk has since debunked the Saudi Arabia location via his X.com account:

The reality is that there are going to be many reports like this because Tesla still has to build quite a few more Gigafactories for its cars and energy products. Right now, Tesla has or has planned gigafactories in these locations:

  • Fremont, CA
  • Austin, TX
  • Berlin, Germany
  • Shanghai, China
  • Monterrey, Mexico (planned)

Tesla also has factories in California and Nevada for its Megapack energy storage and for the Tesla Semi.

Tesla is going to need at least 5 more gigafactories for its cars, and these will most likely be built in whatever locations around the world make the most sense for Tesla and their own internal data.

Saudi Arabia is an interesting location because I typically think of Saudi Arabia as an oil country. However, The Saudi's are also investing in Lucid Motors, an EV company, so there may be a desire for Tesla to come there as automobiles transition to battery powered.

Tesla Gigafactory in Turkey

Erdoğan, the president of Turkey, also wants Elon Musk to build a factory in Turkey.

When you look at why people want Tesla to build a factory in their country, there is a big reason for this. It's very simple, actually.

It's money. Tesla is clearly the leader in the EV transition and wherever a gigafactory is built, jobs and tax revenue are going to follow. Plus, there is a prestige that comes with having a Tesla Gigafactory in a city.

People want to work at Tesla and not only that, EVs are where vehicles are going and for a country to remain competitive in the world, having a Tesla Gigafactory there is a good idea.

Turkey is just north of Saudi Arabia and Iraq, and is definitely a suitable location for a Gigafactory for that part of the world. I think Tesla will choose one of these locations but not both because they are so close to each other.

What do you think - will Tesla build a Gigafactory in Turkey or Saudi Arabia?
