Tesla Semi Battery Life Revealed in Detailed Walk Through From Driver

There is some interesting information about the Tesla Semi and its battery life all from a driver of the Tesla Semi.

There is an interesting video which shows a detailed walk through of the Tesla Semi. This video presents a detailed view of the Pepsi Tesla Semi.

The Tesla Semi is a Class 8 electric truck and was first announced in 2017. It took a while for the Tesla Semi to actually enter production, and it is said to have 500 miles of range and to be able to tow 80,000 pounds.

The driver of this Tesla Semi is a female, and she told the maker of this video. She said the Semi has much more power than a diesel semi. Her daily route uses about 20% charge of the battery and that it is amazing, stable, and the battery life is great.

Once Tesla starts to ramp production, the expectation is that 50,000 Tesla Semis will be built each year. There are powerful motors in the Tesla Semi, and it is safer and easier to drive than a diesel semi. Diesel trucks will be a distant memory some day.

Expected Battery Degradation

Battery degradation isn't something that is actively advertised for EVs, but it does happen. In fact, for my Model 3 RWD from 2022, after almost 10,000 miles, I'm sitting at about 3.7% battery degradation. I was expecting about 5% after the first year and about 1% per year after that, and it seems on track for that. However, my batteries are LFP batteries, which degrade a little slower.

For the Tesla Semi, it would be nice if some battery tests were done on the battery to see what the degradation is after 10,000 miles. One could even just see what the maximum miles is at 100% charge.

I expect that the Tesla Semi will degrade about 10% in the first year or 10,000 miles and then much slower after that up to about 500,000 miles of use. It also depends on the usage of the battery, and those semis that stay between 30% to 80% will degrade slower.

The Tesla Semi does not have LFP batteries, but instead has the standard Lithium-ion batteries. A 10% degradation from 500 miles is 450 miles, which is still a lot of range. Over its life, the Tesla semi will likely go down to 400 miles at maximum degradation.

I would love to see a video of what the mileage is at 100% charge of a Tesla Semi that has driven a lot of miles. What do you think the battery degradation of the Tesla Semi will be?
