The UN Global Compact is the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative. Here's what Lucid joining means.
Lucid Motors has joined the UN Global Compact for Sustainable Transportation, further committing the company to its sustainable transportation goals. The Compact is the world's largest corporate sustainability initiative and is made up of over 22,000 companies from more than 160 countries around the world.
“Joining the UN Global Compact is a milestone in our sustainability journey and a symbol of our dedication to decarbonizing transportation worldwide. As an electric vehicle company relentlessly focused on engineering and performance, our in-house technology enables Lucid Air to generate more range with less energy than any other electric vehicle.” - Peter Rawlinson, Lucid’s CEO and CTO
The UN's Global Compact aims to create a worldwide community of companies and stakeholders with a firm focus on sustainability. Car companies are a major force in this goal, with Lucid joining recent signatories in Ferrari, Lotus and GM Brazil while Audi, Nissan and Volvo are long-time members. Joining the Compact signifies a commitment to responsible business practices that align with the UN's Ten Principles covering things like labor practices, environmental responsibility and anti-corruption.
Compact members also commit to working towards the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. Global Compact organizations report their progress towards these goals annually.
Lucid's Environmental Commitments
Lucid already has a number of plans in place to minimize its impact on the environment. Vehicle efficiency is a major goal for all of Lucid's development programs as more efficient EVs need fewer batteries, making them lighter and lowering the amount of power they need to get moving.
“With each extra mile that we extract per kilowatt-hour of energy, less energy is needed from the electrical grid to get you safely to your destination, and fewer carbon emissions are produced. This same technology and innovative approach can similarly enable smaller, lower-cost battery packs that retain competitive range — which in turn will benefit the environment by requiring fewer battery cells per vehicle.”
Lucid's Derek Jenkins said in a recent interview that the upcoming Lucid Gravity SUV will use the same 112kWh-118kWh batteries as the Air sedan instead of making use of its extra wheelbase with a bigger, heavier pack. Range is as yet unconfirmed, but whether the Gravity will be a leap forward in efficiency or simply feature less range than the Air the commitment to using the same packs shows dedication to Lucid's energy consumption goals.
Lucid also has plans to use batteries that are too old for driving duty, but still functional in a reduced capacity, as energy storage devices giving them a second life and reducing their overall environmental impact.
