The GR Supra hasn't changed drastically and you can snatch the 3.0-liter model for base-car money.
As car enthusiasts, we are constantly on the lookout for the best deals on the car market. The Toyota GR Supra is, currently, in the sweet spot. It's still new enough so that abused examples are few and far in between, and at the same time, it's old enough that great deals are starting to pop up.
The GR Supra came out in 2020, and it seems 2026 will be the swan song of the current model, which will be marked by the track-focused Toyota Supra GRMN. While you can still buy a brand-new GR Supra in 2024, here are a few reasons why you might want to consider an early A90 Supra.
You can buy the best version of the GR Supra for base-car money
The 2.0-liter Toyota GR Supra was not very popular despite being about $9,000 more affordable than the cheapest 3.0-liter model. For 2025, the B58 will, once again, be the only GR Supra engine option, which means a starting price of around $56,000 for a brand-new one.
Luckily for us enthusiasts on a budget, the used market is already full of low-mileage GR Supra models that are hovering around the $45,000-$50,000 range. Of course, limited-edition models like the Special Edition and the 45th Annviersary Edition come at a hefty price, but we are not looking at those at the moment. While price speculations are a thing, there are a few reasons why Toyota GR Supra will probably not appreciate as much as the Mk4 Toyota Supra.
Not much has changed since 2020
Toyota GR Supra came out for the 2020 model year, but since then, not much has changed Sure, we got a few special versions and a 2.0-liter variant, which not many people bought, but that's about it for the most part. J.D. Power gives a reliability score of 61/100, but I saw no major recalls recorded for the GR Supra.
The only recalls I found were about the Supra's seatbelt guide loops, which affected seven cars (only one in the hands of an owner), and a recall about defective backup cameras. Both recalls were issued by BMW. Moreover, even some of the JDM fans are praising the BMW B58 engine for being the most reliable BMW engine ever made.
It makes more power than advertised
In 2022, the GR Supra got a facelift, which among other things, bumped power from the B58 straight-six engine. Power went from 335 to 382 horsepower while torque remained the same at 368 pound-feet. In both cases, however, the power and torque figures were underrated. Dyno tests reveal that even early GR Supra models, equipped with the 3.0-liter, turbocharged inline-six make substantially more.
Car and Driver tested their 2020 Toyota GR Supra press car back in the day and revealed 339 horsepower at the rear wheels, which is substantially more than the claimed, 335 crankshaft horsepower, and an even more insane, 427 pound-feet of torque instead of the official 368. This started a trend because the next year, when Toyota upped the GR Supra's horsepower to "382”, another dyno test was carried out. The dyno pull showed 388 horsepower at the wheels, although other dyno tests show figures of around 360-370 horsepower – still way above advertised.
Do you really need the manual?
In 2023, Toyota listened to the cries of fans, and gave the GR Supra the option of a six-speed, iMT manual with automatic rev-matching on downshifts (which you can turn off). Driver involvement aside, the eight-speed ZF automatic remains a capable option and is also the only transmission option for early GR Supra models.
It also happens to be the quicker variant of the car, achieving 0 to 60 mph in around 4.0 seconds in 2020-2022 models. The 2023-onwards are 0.2 seconds quicker, but the difference is negligible. And let's face it, you'll probably modify it.
