Before too long, the only powertrain you'll be able to get from Smart is electric. But at least it will be the least expensive way to get into an electric vehicle.
Smart has announced pricing for the 2017 Fortwo Electric Drive Coupe and Cabrio. The Coupe will set you back $24,550 and the Cabrio is slightly higher at $28,750. Prices include destination and delivery charges. Compared to the outgoing Electric Drive, the new model is $1,200 less. Add in the $7,500 national tax credit for EVs and they become very appealing; $17,050 for the coupe and $21,250 for the cabrio.
In terms of power, the ForTwo Electric Drive comes with more power - 80 horsepower (up 8) and 118 pound-feet of torque (up 22). Smart quotes 0-60 times of 11.4 seconds for the coupe and 11.7 seconds for the cabrio. Range has also been improved from 68 to 80 miles. A full charge is said to take about three hours when plugged into a 240V charger.
If you find yourself interested in one, you can pick up a ForTwo Electric Drive this summer.
