Porsche never built a 959 cabriolet during its short production run in the eighties. But that doesn't mean this idea hasn't become real.
A dealership in Italy has a one-off 1987 Porsche 959 cabriolet up for sale. Before you start thinking that someone took a 959 off the assembly line and cut the roof off, there is an intriguing story about how this 959 became a cabriolet.
This particular model was first owned by Porsche racing driver Jürgen Lässig back in 1987. According to Top Gear, Lässig had a huge accident on the Autobahn that damaged the roof and one side of the 959. It would be expected that this vehicle would be heading to a scrapyard, but German company Auto Becker bought the 959 and transformed it into a cabriolet.
One of the interesting features of the 959 cabriolet is the ability to swap from a standard windshield to a speedster version. The original roof was retained - currently kept in a large wooden box - and can be used as the hardtop. Importantly, the 959 cabriolet retains the 2.9L twin-turbo flat six with 444 horsepower and four-wheel drive system.
The pricetag? About 1 million euros (around $1,128,200 to current exchange rates).
