The first 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ EVs are rolling off the line in Spring Hill, Tennessee. We look at why the luxury SUV is so important for Cadillac.
Production is officially underway for the most important Cadillac vehicle in years. The first 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ EVs rolled off the line in Spring Hill, Tennessee. The LYRIQ EV SUV represents the future of Cadillac. Executives have promised that Cadillac will go all-electric by 2030.
“The Cadillac LYRIQ sets the standard for the future of Cadillac and marks another major milestone in GM’s commitment to an all-electric future,” said Reuss. “This is a monumental day for the entire GM team. We retooled Spring Hill Assembly with the best, most advanced technology in the world and the team worked tirelessly to complete the preparations nine months ahead of the original schedule.”
Transforming the Spring Hill Plant
GM is spending $2 billion to retool and upgrade Spring Hill to be able to build the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ EV. The same plant also builds the Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6 and GMC Acadia. GM and its battery partner LG Energy Solutions are also spending over $2 billion to build a battery plant nearby. Spring Hill manufacturing complex, which consists of a vehicle assembly plant, metal stamping plant and an engine plant, is the largest GM facility in North America.
You can watch the LYRIQ production process:
The 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ is the first Cadillac and the second GM vehicle to be built on the Ultium battery platform. The magic of the new battery platform is that it can be reconfigured to propel different sized vehicles. The GMC HUMMER EV supertruck was the first GM vehicle on the Ultium platform. The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, 2024 GMC Sierra EV and the 2024 GMC HUMMER EV SUV will follow on the Ultium Platform.
2023 Cadillac LYRIQ EV is Already in High Demand
According to Cadillac, reservations for the 2023 Cadillac LYRIQ Debut Edition sold out in just over ten minutes last summer. Cadillac will begin taking additional orders for the 2023 LYRIQ on May 19.
In recent years, General Motors has used Cadillac showcase its latest technology. Likewise, Cadillac intends to use LYRIQ to highlight its all-electric future. Cadillac estimates that the new SUV will have the equivalent of 340 horsepower and an estimated range of over 300 miles. Most importantly, it will be luxurious but relatively affordable compared to its competition. Cadillac says that the LYRIQ will go on sale starting with a price of $59,990.
LYRIQ will be equipped with quick-charging technology to help alleviate any concerns about range anxiety. It will also come with a dual level charging cord to make it easier for drivers to charge the vehicle in any situation. It will also feature the latest Super Cruise driver-assistance technology. It will have a 33-inch curved LED screen display.
Cadillac’s Tesla Fighter
Cadillac needs the 2023 LYRIQ EV to build excitement for the brand. The LYRIQ carries the new face of Cadillac and is beautiful. Cadillac wants to convince younger buyers that it does represent luxury and that it can compete with the premium brands like the BMWs, Mercedes, Teslas and Audis of the world. The luxury buyers haven’t signed on to Cadillac in huge numbers in recent years. Hopefully, the stunning LYRIQ and the promise of going all-electric will win buyers over.
