FCA is recalling more than 300,000 Ram diesel trucks after six caught on fire. We have details on why owners are being told to park their vehicles outside until they can be repaired.

Ram is asking owners of certain Ram vehicles to park outdoors until their trucks cans be recalled because of a fire risk. Ram is recalling more than 300,000 2021-2023 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups. They are also recalling 3500/4500/5500 cab chassis trucks from the same model years. The problem only affects trucks with the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engine. The recall does not include the popular Ram 1500.

What is Causing the Problem

According to a statement from the automaker, the trucks are being recalled to replace an electrical connector. “An FCA US investigation discovered the intake heater-grid relays on certain vehicles may exhibit overheating. In rare instances, this condition may pose a fire risk.”

The statement says that there are reports of six potentially related fires, but no injuries or accidents. According to the company, five of the fires occurred while the engines were still on. The other fire was reported after the ignition was turned off.

Which Vehicles are Involved

Ram says the problem affects certain 2021-2023 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, and 3500/4500/5500 cab chassis trucks from the same model years. The recall is limited to vehicles equipped with 6.7-liter Cummins diesel engines and prior-generation heater-grid relays, which were the focus of two previous but smaller campaigns.
FCA is recalling 306,165 diesel trucks sold in the U.S. It is also calling back 21,988 trucks sold in Canada and another 12,590 sold outside of North America.

Parking Warning

FCA says that despite the minimal risk, drivers should not park their vehicles indoors until after they are repaired. It also might be smart to not park next to another vehicle. FCA will start notifying customers next month, but drivers can determine if their vehicles are included in the recall campaign by checking mopar.com/recalls, checktoprotect.org, or nhtsa.gov.
