Truck fans split - buy a 2024 Toyota Tacoma or a 2023 Tacoma?
My excitement level was right at 100 out of 100 when I attended the 2024 Tacoma world premiere in May.
Several aspects of this newest midsize truck blew me away.
New Tacoma tough and sleek exterior styling gives a solid first impression. Interior cabin design and features have been redesigned and modernized. I especially like the new Tacoma Trailhunter interior.
So much new technology, safety, power, and trim levels (like TRD PreRunner) to like.
But will people choose to buy this next gen 2024 or will they prefer a current 2023 model?
2024 Toyota Tacoma vs 2023
I am a member of the Facebook forum “Toyota Tacoma Enthusiast” which has over 85,000 Toyota Tacoma owners, fans, addicts, and enthusiasts. This group is an excellent resource, and I encourage any Tacoma fan to join.
A poll question in the forum from May got me thinking about new versus old. “Buy a 2023 Tacoma or wait for a 2024?”
This was taken on May 18th, the day before the official 2024 Tacoma reveal. So perhaps these results will have changed in the last two months.
Out of 655 total votes, 70% of respondents said they would choose the new 2024, while 30% said to stick with the current 2023.
Fans Comment on 2024 Tacoma
Time to see what Toyota Tacoma fans think about this question.
Adam answered. “If it was me I would wait for the 2024, the new truck is a massive upgrade over the third gen.”
“This thing will blow the 3rd gen out of the water. The 3.5 v6 (from the 3rd generation) makes the truck feel underpowered. It’s ridiculously disappointing.” Added Trevor.

Reagan stated. “Personally, don’t get the first year of any new model. Even Toyota.” Actually, many Toyota Tacoma fans left comments along these lines.
Denis said. “Love the new one. Will be selling my 2020 TRD Off Road with only 27,000km, should be an easy sell.”
“2023 for me. The simpler, the better.” Declared Joshua.
“Looks like a baby Tundra. I Love it!” Said Julia.
2024 Tacoma Engine vs 2023
One of the main differences is with engine power and performance.
The two engine options for third generation 2023 Tacoma are a 2.7-liter 4-cylinder that produces 159 horsepower and 180 lb.-ft. torque and the reliable 3.5-liter V6 with 278 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. torque.
People looking to buy a next-gen 2024 Toyota Tacoma will have more power on the table, whichever powertrain they decide to go with.
First, a 2.4-liter i-FORCE turbo 4-cylinder engine with 278 horsepower and 317 lb.-ft. torque (except Tacoma SR which offers 228 and 243).
Buyers can also pick the i-FORCE MAX, which delivers 326 horsepower and 465 lb.-ft torque. This is the 2.4-liter turbo hybrid powertrain.
Either way, plenty more pickup and power with 2024 Tacoma.
Time for Your 2024 Toyota Tacoma Comments
It would be interesting to do this poll question again now that Toyota Tacoma fans have had some time to research and get to know 2024 Tacoma a little more.
I have a feeling even more Tacoma fans and owners would choose the brand new 2024.
By the way, 2024 Tacoma non-hybrids are expected to reach dealerships by the end of this year, while Tacoma i-FORCE MAX hybrids should debut the first part of 2024.
What do you think – are you sticking with the third generation 2023, or would you rather try fourth generation 2024 Tacoma?
Thanks for reading everyone. See you next story.

Although not discussed in…
Although not discussed in any of the article, MPG will be a deciding factor for me. This is one area where Toyota has fallen way short with their trucks and truck based SUVs...
Although I certainly cannot…
Although I certainly cannot know what the reliability of the new Tacoma will be, I bought a new 2005 (the first year of that new model), and it has been 100% without issues in over 135,000 miles.
I sure hope the new one will be the same, as it's time for a new truck.
