Porsche unveils its newest child seat with style.
Family cars remain the dominating force of the auto-industry even though we enthusiasts could care less. At first glance, a company like Porsche would seem allergic to the family sedan and SUV markets but the last 20 years have proved the opposite. They’ve embraced the reality of the kind of money that is involved in the family car segment and now they have some very special additions for your Cayenne, Macan, Taycan, and Panamera.
A fully reimagined child seat is now available for customers. The Porsche Tequipment-designed units will come in two sizes: the Porsche Baby Seat i-Size and Porsche Kid Seat i-Size. Porsche Tequipment and Porsche F.A Studio worked together on this project to create a Kid Seat that looks like a shrunken-down version of your 911s sport bucket seats. Your Babies will cruise in utter and absolute style.
If you had any doubt that Porsche could make even a child seat look cool, you would be sorely mistaken. The new i-Size seats have massive bolsters on all flanks for front and side collision safety. Your kid will be strapped in like they’re preparing for an 8-hour stint at Le Mans with Porsche’s 5 point harness system that was directly inspired by Porsche Motorsport.
The two sizes correspond to your child’s age. Baby Seat is for children under 15 months with a body length of 40-83 cm and the Kid Seat is for children between 15 months and 4 years of age or kids who are 76-105 cm tall.
Customers will be able to use the seatbelt to secure the child seat or a flex base unit that only secures the Baby Seat. For your Baby Seat, the flex base is tethered by the anchor points that are built into the car itself. Once anchored, the flex base can be adjusted for tilt angle to ensure your baby is comfortable. The head bolsters are also adjustable to your kid’s exact size.
The cloth material used for both the Kid and Baby sizes can be color-matched to whatever combination you want. Porsche calls them comfort covers and claims that the new materials offer reduced “heat build-up on hot days and ensure a pleasant seat temperature.”
And yes, it can be washed. They couldn’t forget the trademark characteristic of babies, the hot mess they leave behind. Porsche ensures its customers that the comfort covers can be safely washed at a temperature of 60 degrees celsius.
The seats were designed with just 2 anchor points for easy installation, and Porsche stresses the importance of using the points correctly and following the instructions accordingly. The regulation laws of the seat require the really young kids to be faced backward for added safety.
So, can you use this on Porsche’s sports cars? It depends. The 911, Cayman, and Boxster have always been good every-day sports cars with luggage room and comfortable characteristics, but if you ordered the full bucket seats or sport buckets for your car, you can’t bring your kid along in either of these seats.
Even though it would be the greatest picture of all time to have matching race-style bucket seats with your 1-year-old child, Porsche advises against it.
