2015 Ford Mustang Production Could Begin Much Later Than Expected
The 1964 Ford Mustang was introduced at the New York World’s Fair on April 17th 1964 and was available for purchase the next day (with one actually sold before the car was introduced) so with the 2015 Ford Mustang marking the 50th anniversary of the fabled pony car, many believed that the new S550 Mustang would be available for sale on or around April 17th 2014…50 years after the original. Unfortunately, information from a leaked dealership document that was posted on the S550 enthusiast site Mustang 6G.com suggests that not only will hopeful 2015 Mustang owners not be picking their cars up in April – they may not be picking them up until much later in the year.
According to Mustang6G.com member chesney28, the 2015 Ford Mustang will not official go on sale until May 13th 2014 and production scheduling for those pre-ordered Mustangs will begin about a month later on June 12th. Production for the 2015 Ford Mustang is scheduled to begin – and hold onto your hats for this one – on August 11th 2014. Provided that the various quality control processes take about a month, this 2015 Mustang schedule would suggest that buyers won’t be getting their hands on one until sometime in mid September. Depending on how many pre-orders the company gets, a prospective buyer may not be able to walk in, buy and drive out a 2015 Ford Mustang until sometime during the fourth quarter of the 2014 calendar. In other words…many new Mustang owners might be buying their new muscle car just in time to put it away for the winter.
I have to admit that I am an automotive romantic so I envisioned this grand debut of the 2015 Ford Mustang on April 17th 2014 at the New York International Auto Show followed by thousands of S550 Mustangs being purchased at dealerships around the country on Friday April 18th. Ford spoiled that dreamy timeline by unveiling the 2015 Mustang on December 5th but there was still hope for those who wanted to buy a brand new S550 Mustang on April 18th…exactly 50 years after the first massive wave of Mustang owners drove away in their new Ford sports car. Ford Motor Company sold 22,000 Mustangs on the first day that they were available back in 1964 and while changes in the face of the auto industry make catching that number nearly impossible – Ford could have a marketing gold mine in the angle of selling the new model 50 years after the first Mustang was officially available for sale.
However, this news from Mustang6G.com makes all of that a pipe dream and not only will 2015 Ford Mustang buyers likely not have their new Mustang in time to celebrate the Mustang’s 50th anniversary – they might not even have their 2015 model in time to enjoy the summer of 2014. Worst of all, there is a good chance that at least some 205 Mustang buyers in the northern US states will not get their new Mustang before the snow falls so they will either be driving their brand new muscle car in the snow or they can wait until the spring of 2015. That is not very romantic…but perhaps they can drive their 2015 Ford Mustang GT to celebrate the car’s 51st birthday?
It should be noted that this information is not technically official as it didn’t come directly from Ford Motor Company but considering that the schedule is taken from a dealership bulletin – it seems more than likely that this is the correct timing for the 2015 Ford Mustang production launch. This really shoudnt have too much of an impact on the sales of the S550 Mustang in the long run but provided that these dates are accurate, it certainly seems that Ford Motor Company is missing out on the chance to get the 2015 Mustang into the hands of hungry consumers at the height of the car’s popularity.
