They were put on the car so that they can lower the weight by not having a jack, extra rim and tire and the subsequent tools which will lead to having more space in the trunk. Also the lower the weight the better fuel consumption and performance, and easier it is to perform better on the safety/crash rating tests. Plenty of bmw owners know how to change a tire, I think it's just women who don't.
