A Future Tesla Destroyer
Could they do it? Sure. They changed the world with the introduction of the fully Electric Nissan Leaf in 2011 and became the #1 all-time electric car seller in terms of volume of any car manufacturer in the world. In 2014 the company raced a zero emissions Leaf RC Concept at Le Mans and have been pioneering self-driving technology.
Are they committed to it? Nissan’s European EV Director stated to Top Gear “We can’t build an electric GT-R today. But do I want to? I’d Love to. Will we be able to do that in the future? I can’t see a technical reason why we wouldn’t be able to implement electric vehicle technology in something like a performance vehicle.”
So do the mainstream auto makers want to go after Tesla’s market? So far, in my estimation, none has even made a serious attempt. There isn’t one 250 mile all electric car that even competes with Tesla.
Could Nissan become a Tesla competitor? Oh yes, I fully believe they can. Take the Nissan GT-R and make it fully electric, with its own version of Tesla’s performance buttons like the “Insane button” and “Ludicrous button”, and you will have a strong competitor. Just don’t make it a hybrid, give it at least 250 miles of EV range.
