2016 Toyota Tacoma Pickup Truck Production Shut Down For What Reason?
A major storm tore through San Antonio, Texas this week. On its way past the storm also tore a hole in the roof of the Toyota plant here. This plant is the main operations hub for 2016 Toyota Tacoma production. As a result of the storm, the Tacoma plant will be shut down for at least two days, today and tomorrow, according to news reports. A power outage from the storm hampered cleanup and repair efforts.
Last month, Toyota’s production of the Tacoma peaked at over 18,000 units, which came at just the right time for the truck. That was a record for Toyota, who had only ever broken 18K units in one month one time before at a slightly smaller volume. The shutdown could potentially reduce Toyota’s output by from 500 to 5,000 trucks this month depending upon the damage to the plant that needs to be cleaned up. If the higher number is the case, June or July could be the first month ever for the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon to pass the Tacoma in monthly sales.
Plant closures due to natural disasters are not uncommon. Last month, multiple North American General Motors plants were closed when earthquakes in Japan shut down key suppliers.
