Nice article Al. You really cover many points well. Unfortunately the current state of public charging does not match the numbers given. Listing that there are 150K gas stations and 50K EV charging stations just doesn't show on the road. In most cities you only need to drive 2-10 minutes away from most anywhere to find an available, open gas station. And even if there is a line at the busiest station, you will only have to wait a few minutes to fill up, which only takes a few minutes to have a full tank. In contrast, you need to really search around for a nearby EV charging station, and many are being used, and the charging time for L1/L2 stations is hours as opposed to minutes. To have an EV charging station that matches the convenience of a gas station you need to have a fast charger, and a new electric vehicle that accepts a fast charger of that plug style. And that combination is VERY rare today. Thankfully, I have a PHEV so it is not an issue for me, and a few of the newer BEVs have enough range that we can charge up at home, so it doesn't matter that the available fast charging EV network is not robust yet. The news as you have shown is looking good for the future though, and probably within 5 years we will see a large number of fast, compatible charging stations built to start to see a valid comparison to gasoline stations in cities. Using Google it shows 4 level 2 chargers in the city that I live, and one fast/Tesla charger nearby. Of course there are more fast chargers in larger cities, but the EV charging infrastructure still needs development.
