Comparing early efforts to today's products alone are like saying that a company like Honda cannot adapt and create new and even better technologies, as time passes. The Gen 1 insight was handicapped more because it was a "singular task" vehicle as in a Commuter Car ONLY. The Prius initially offered a vehicle that allowed more passengers and greater utility beyond commuting.
Personally, I've test driven the latest Prius and the Gen 3 Insight. I loved the Honda. It was like any other car on the road in almost every way. Plus it could handle curves much better, with superior acceleration and it didn't have a quirky design.
