Ford Recalls Center On Software, Panoramic Roof Repair
More than 41,000 Ford Expeditions, Lincoln Navigators, Mustangs, and Transits were recalled yesterday by the automaker to take care of two software/safety- and one safety-related issues. Ford has issued regular recalls for the last several months. I recently wrote about a small, but important Expedition recall. JImmy Dinsmore, one of our F150 reporters, recently wrote about a different recall of regarding Ford Rangers Recalled for transmission issues.
Ford Recalls Expeditions, Navigators
In the first recall, Ford acted because the SUVs have non-functioning Pre-Collision Assist features. The Pre-Collision Assist features include:
- Forward Collision Warning
- Dynamic Brake Support
- Automatic Emergency Braking
A non-functioning Pre-Collision Assist system may not detect or reduce the risk or severity of a frontal crash. It could increase the risk of an injury or crash if the driver is relying on assistance from the system.
This condition affects the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models equipped with the standard camera-only Pre-Collision Assist system.
Ford Unaware Of Crashes, Injuries
Ford is not aware of any reports of crashes or injuries related to this condition. This action affects 25,081 vehicles in the U.S. and federal territories and 1,106 in Canada.
The vehicles were built at the Kentucky Truck Plant and include:
- 2020 Ford Expeditions built from April 16, 2019 to March 20, 2020
- 2020 Lincoln Navigators built from July 15, 2019 to March 19, 2020
To fix this problem, dealers will reflash the body control module, antilock braking system, instrument panel cluster, and headlight control modules with the appropriate software fixes. The tire pressure monitor system will require a reset.
The Ford identifier for this recall is 20S20.
Ford Recall Centers On Transmission Issue
The second recall, covering 2019-2020 Mustangs and 2019 Expeditions, includes the "transmission, not in park" warning message and chime. The warning and chime are only active for three seconds when the transmission is not in Park, the ignition is off, and the driver's door is closed.
The chime should remain active for 10 seconds, and the "transmission not in park warning" message should display for 30 minutes when the driver's door is closed.
If the "transmission not in park" warning and chime sound for less than the design period, the driver could exit the vehicle, when it is not in Park. In this situation, the vehicle may roll accidentally, increasing the risk of injury or crash.
Ford Recall Primarily In Sudbury
Ford isn't aware of any reports of injuries or crashes caused by this problem. It affects 10,460 vehicles in the U.S. federal territories, 158 in Canada, and 17 in Mexico.
The affected vehicles include:
- 2019-2020 Ford Mustangs built at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant April 26 to Oct. 10, 2019
- 2019 Ford Expeditions built at the Kentucky Truck Plant Oct. 16, 2018 to Oct. 13, 2019.
To fix this problem, dealers will reprogram the instrument panel cluster. The Ford reference for this recall is 20S21.
In the third recall, certain 2014-2017 Ford Transit Connects, equipped with panoramic vista roofs. There may be bonding problems with those roofs. The issues range from wind noise, water leaks, and, in some cases, separation from the vehicle.
Ford Recall Involves Improper Panoramic Roof Bond
The problem is an improper bond between the panoramic roof and the vehicle body. Ford isn't aware of any reports of crashes or injuries due to this problem. The issue affects 5,088 in the U.S. and federal territories, and 45 in Canada.
