I don't think that's going to be the case now, at least not to the level it was 10 yrs ago. The difference is that in 2009 the prius had no real competition, most fuel efficient cars were achieving low 30 mpgs. Now the competition is much closer with plenty of cars getting 40+ mpg and also there are affordable electric cars.
