Why You Likely Won’t See The All-New Subaru Solterra EV SUV In Your City

When and where will you be able to buy the 2023 Subaru Solterra all-electric SUV? Many U.S. customers won't find one in the city where they live.

Subaru will launch its first-ever all-electric SUV called Solterra next year in the U.S. as a 2023 model. Where will you be able to buy the new Solterra? Like the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid, initial availability will be limited to U.S. states that have adopted California's ZEV Emissions program.

A statement from Planet Subaru says retailers in California will get the Solterra first along with Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, Washington State, and Washington DC, Vermont, New York, Maine, Rhode Island, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, and Colorado.

What is the price of the Solterra?

Subaru of America has not announced pricing yet, but reports say the new 2023 Solterra EV SUV will be priced in the low $40,000 range. Pricing will be after Federal ($7,500) and State rebates.

When will Subaru reveal the new Solterra?

The 2023 Subaru Solterra will likely be uncovered at the 2021 New York International Auto Show on press day, August 19, 2021. The show runs from August 20-29 for the general public.

What will be the range of the Solterra?

Initial reports say the Solterra will have an electric vehicle range of 300 miles. Subaru has not confirmed new model details. The Solterra will use electric technology developed with Toyota, which owns 20 percent of Subaru Corporation. The all-electric vehicle will ride on the e-Subaru Global Platform, a new all-electric vehicle architecture.

Where will the Solterra be manufactured?

Subaru Corporation will build the Solterra at its main plant in Gunma, Japan. The U.S. plant in Lafayette, Indiana, makes the Outback, Ascent, Impreza, and Legacy models.

Where will the Solterra be sold?

The 2023 Subaru Solterra EV will go on sale in Japan and the U.S. and then be released in Canada, Europe, and China by the middle of 2022. But the new Solterra won't be sold in Australia.

A report from Automotive News says Subaru CEO Tomomi Nakamura told them late last year they are taking a slow approach to launch the new Solterra. "For the U.S. market, we're not sure how rapidly the EV market will grow. We wanted to minimize our investment because we're not sure how much profit this project is going to make."
