Overall, I agree with your conclusion that despite have most of complexity of ICE vehicles, plus the added weight and duplicate EV drivetrain, hybrids and plug-in hybrids are very reliable. Even though you will never have die-hard BEV advocates agree, plug-in hybrids ARE battery electric vehicles, when they solely run off of their batteries. And for those types of driving that favor EVs, like low speed, and stop-and-go operation, EVs are far more efficient and reliable. And having two drivetrains (EV/ICE) means that they each have much less wear than a vehicle that runs off of gas alone. My only caveat is that Consumer Reports has recently become a clearly biased publication, targeting Tesla. It's current CEO just came from being on Ford's board of directors, and they have produced a series of articles designed to discredit and attack Tesla. That is not saying that Tesla is without fault, especially with occasional spotty build quality, and some shady marketing tactics. I would be curious to see the Tesla model's reliability compared to comparable, near-luxury, gas cars from BMW, Mercedes and Audi. I can speak personally to the positive side of plug-in hybrid reliability from my experience of having 3 Chevy Volts and a Cadillac ELR, which have been very good. Still, I plan on my next new vehicle being an Aptera, which is a BEV, with solar assist. And I am hoping that with the simpler EV design, that it will be my most reliable vehicle yet.
