I have a 2023 RAV4 XSE…
I have a 2023 RAV4 XSE Hybrid and the road and wind noise has driven me to do a number of sound deadening upgrades to it DIY. Too expensive to pay someone else. So far I have added Second Skin Damplifier Pro and Megazorbe sound absorbing foam to the 4 doors, added Damplifier Pro and Spectrum to the wheel wells underneath the wheel well liners, and added Damplifier Pro and Spectrum to the tire carrier well. I have also added secondary weather stripping on all 4 passenger doors. Honestly, before I ever buy another vehicle, I will run a sound level test at 75 to 80 mph before I consider buying. I also added foam underneath the larger window seal at the back of the driver and front passenger windows to help cut the noise. Oddly enough, I went from a 2022 RAV4 XSE Hybrid to the 2023 model and the road/wind noise is significantly worse. The 2023 is riding on Michelin Primacy tires.
My readings have gone from 75 to 76 db without treatment (average LAeq) to 71 to 72db. Window noise at each window opening is still too loud and road noise is also still too loud. I saw where someone got the dealer to replace the window seal correcting the problem so I am wondering if the factory seals are simply not as good.
My next steps with this car to make it better will be to pull the carpet up and put soundskin (the three layer which has the butyl, foil, and closed cell foam) under a good bit of the carpeted area and up towards the fire walls. With the work that I have done so far, I honestly expected to be solidly sub-70db so something else is going on with this vehicle. If my next round of DIY does not correct it, I may upset my spouse by trading for something else. I love everything about this Toyota except for the cabin noise (road and wind). Fuel mileage I routinely get mid-40's in rush hour traffic though the mileage drops off pretty quickly above a sustained 75 mph especially when fighting a headwind.
