Subaru Suddenly Drops The New WRX TR After Only One Year
Subaru of America has already discontinued the new 2024 WRX TR performance car. It didn't last long—after only one year, it's already gone. This is not surprising to me because performance fans were underwhelmed with the TR trim level. You can read my report here.
A report from Automotive News says, "The TR trim will not continue beyond the 2024 model year, a brand spokesperson said."
I asked Subaru for a response, and here is their reply.
"The 2024 WRX TR is currently in production and will remain in production throughout the remainder of the model year. For the 2025 model year, the newly announced tS model will essentially replace the TR in the model line-up. Subaru continues to improve its products year over year, and the WRX tS reflects this."
The 2024 WRX TR was revealed last year at Subiefest Florida and has not received good reviews. Subaru unveiled the all-new 2024 WRX TR with a 6-speed manual gearbox compatible with EyeSight, a first for WRX.
EyeSight safety tech will now be a standard feature on all new WRX sports car trim levels, whether they have an automatic or a 6-speed manual transmission. This is part of Subaru's master plan to make its cars safer.

WRX TR Upgrades
The 2024 WRX TR comes equipped with a high-performance Brembo braking system, stiffer springs, and revised damping rates for better body control and steering response.
It also has new 19-inch wheels paired with Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires, retuned steering for improved road feel, and Recaro black and gray Ultrasuede front seats.
The moonroof was deleted for weight savings and a low center of gravity.
Was It The Price?
It could have been the price. The new WRX TR 6-speed manual is $42,775, and the price includes destination and delivery fees ($1,120).
The 2024 WRX 6-speed manual trim level is $33,855, and the WRX Premium 6-speed manual is $35,755. That's a $7,000 to $9,000 price difference.
Subaru Didn't Waste Any Time
Subaru acted quickly and replaced the WRX TR. Subaru of America recently introduced the 2025 WRX tS (tuned by STI) trim level. You can read my report here.
The new WRX tS was displayed on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at Wicked Big Meet.
What is the difference between the WRX TR and WRX tS?
A spokesperson for Subaru of America told Automotive News that the main performance difference between the TR and tS trims is that STI tuned the tS's electronically controlled dampers. The tS also adds a fully digital gauge display and blue interior accenting.
There's Only One Problem With The WRX tS
The performance car features a 2.4-liter turbocharged Subaru Boxer engine, delivering 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. That's the problem. There are no engine upgrades.
For once, I'd like to see Subaru Tecnica International get its hands on the FA24 turbo Boxer. Giving it around 300 horsepower would excite some performance fans.
When Can You Purchase The New WRX tS?
You will have to wait for a while. The 2025 Subaru WRX tS will arrive at U.S. Subaru retailers in the first quarter of 2025. Pricing for the new WRX tS will be announced later this year. Stay tuned.
The 2024 Subaru WRX TR is out, and the 2025 Subaru WRX tS is in. If you want the WRX TR, you'll need to act quickly. Will the one-year wonder be a collector car? Maybe in 20 years.
