The Subaru Wilderness Models Get No Respect

What are the best new vehicles for outdoor adventurers? A new report says you would be wrong if you picked the Subaru Crosstrek, Outback, and Forester Wilderness. Why did Subaru's Wilderness models get shut out of the top models? I'll explain why here.

Where are Subaru's Wilderness models?

Newsweek announced its best lifestyle auto awards in multiple categories. One category is the best new vehicles for outdoor adventurers. This one is a shocker.

Surprisingly, not one Subaru vehicle makes this Newsweek list.

You would think that at least one of the Subaru Wilderness models would have been picked. However, the Crosstrek Wilderness, Outback Wilderness, and Forester Wilderness were not among the best new adventure models.

Before I explain why, I've listed the best new adventure models according to the Newsweek ranking, starting with the top model.

Newsweek's Best New Vehicle For Outdoor Adventurers

  1. Mercedes-Benz G-Class - 8.8
  2. Ford Bronco - 8.7
  3. Jeep Wrangler - 8.6
  4. Toyota Land Cruiser - 8.4
  5. Toyota Tacoma - 8.3
  6. Lexus GX - 8.2
  7. Rivian R1T - 8.1
  8. Ford Ranger - 8.1
  9. Rivian R1S - 8.0
  10. Ford Bronco Sport - 7.9
  11. GMC Canyon - 7.9

Where are the rugged outdoor-themed Subaru Wilderness models?

Some excellent models in the outdoor adventurers' category get the nod, but I still can't figure out why Newsweek overlooked the Subaru Wilderness models.

The absence of Subaru in this category is likely due to the specific criteria used by Newsweek to evaluate adventure vehicles, which may not align perfectly with Subaru's offerings. However, they don't give their criteria, so it's still a mystery.

One Newsweek buyer says, "Capability, on- and off-road, is important. I plan to modify my new rig so I can take it camping and am intrigued by models that enhance the outdoors experience."

When I think of outdoor-themed vehicles, the Subaru Wilderness models come to mind first. The more rugged Outback, Crosstrek, and Forester were built for extreme off-road trekking. They were designed to enhance the outdoor experience many active customers seek.

I've written much about the three Wilderness trims. These models are designed for outdoor enthusiasts, with features and capabilities to get you further off the grid.

What sets the Subaru Crosstrek, Outback, and Forester apart from the other best-in-category model rankings above?

Let's delve into what sets the Subaru Crosstrek, Outback, and Forester apart from the other best-in-category model rankings above.

We can start with Subaru's excellent Symmetrical all-wheel-drive technology. It's more than an all-wheel-drive system because the Japanese automaker also couples it with its X-Mode and duel-function X-Mode tech for extreme all-weather performance and all-terrain capability. You won't find a feature like X-Mode on your average SUV.

With 8.7 inches of ground clearance on Crosstrek and Forester (Outback Wilderness has 9.4 inches, Crosstrek 9.3 inches, and Forester 9.2 inches), standard roof racks, top safety scores, excellent fuel mileage, and affordability, Subaru models stand out with their unique features, reassuring you of their suitability for your specific outdoorsy lifestyle needs.

There's something for everyone.

A younger demographic of active adults who are mountain bikers, hikers, snowboarders, surfers, kayakers, and campers are drawn to the Subaru brand. They love the new 2024 Subaru Crosstrek the most. The Outback and Forester aren't far behind.

And then there's the question of affordability.

Most of Newsweek's 'best adventurer' picks are more expensive than the Subaru models. Wilderness models are affordable compared to the top picks above, providing you with a cost-effective yet high-quality option for your outdoor adventures. You may want to wait.

You may not be ready to buy a new Wilderness model. If you can wait a year or two, the 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness will get a complete remodel, and the 2025 Forester Wilderness will also get significant new upgrades. The Crosstrek Wilderness could get minor changes next year. Find out more in my report here.
