I've been on, around and in…
I've been on, around and in trucks for a long time, both 2 and 4 wheel drive. I can tell you that 35s on a stock F150 is the easiest way to go before you start "needing" to make many other upgrades. However, even with 35s, you should also start the simple upgrades to the brake system. Adding braided brake lines and upgraded pads/rotors and/or shoes/drums. Also, remember to flush and change your brake fluid every 2 years or 30k
Another easy upgrade is a trans fluid cooler and upgraded radiator.
Adding a smooth flowing and true Cold Air Intake (not a cone filter under the hood)as well as a larger TB, a free flowing, true dual exhaust with X pipe and of course a tune will assist in better performance. (A tune is also highly recommended after these are done, so keep that in mind)
After that, you should look into differential gear sets. While it is not as simple and easy as the brake system or others I mentioned, it can save a lot of frustration in the long run, especially if you want to add a bigger lift and tires.
I know a lot of these are "no-brainers" for many people, they are all relatively simple add on or modifications that can be done in your driveway or home garage on a weekend. The dif gear changes may be a little more complicated, but can still be done in 2 days time.
V8 or V6, 6 or 10 speeds, all of these drive trains are set up to run best with factory specs. So adding power grabbing tires or heavy bumpers, etc. have a major effect on the truck and it's reliability. So help your truck out as much as you can and it will return the favor.
