I drive a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport with a push button start. My car also has to sense the key fob to start and it can only be about a foot away from the car or the buttons on the door handles won't lock or unlock the car. However, my car will beep and display a message that the key is not detected if you leave the car running and walk away with the key fob.
