I questioned the veracity of this story. But, I then went on google, looked up the price of per KWH to charge at a Tesla Supercharger and... It is entirely possible Tommy spent more charging his Tesla than putting gas in the car.
I've seen a lot of hit stories against EVs. And I've seen people take pop shots at perfectly reasonable comments saying negative things about EVs. Hell, I love EVs and I have been known to say mean things about EV cars. I'd say this is a story every person about to buy an electric car needs to read, understand, and think about before purchase.
Your question about does a person need to be able to charge at home? I'd say yes unless they have a place they can charge at work. Basically, somewhere they can plug in and park for hours and hours. I have a garage and plug my car in at night.
I also have an advantage most of the country doesn't. I live in Texas where electricity is unregulated. Because of that, my electric company does not charge me for my use between 8pm and 6am. I could charge my car and use my air conditioner while drying my clothes between those hours and not pay a penny extra for electricity.
So, while poor Tommy had to pay more for his Tesla than an ICE SUB, I don't even pay anything for fuel to move my car.
So, yes. When buying an EV, please consider where you will charge your car. Even if you use public chargers, there may be other reasons to buy an EV. But consider ALL the variables.
