ChaDemo units are not that expensive (about $10k - don't know how much that differs to a standard petrol pump and associated plumbing/electrics) and they are the same size as a petrol/diesel pump. The issue is getting enough power to something 4 times as powerful. To recharge a 500 mile capable battery would take about 1200A (at, say 300VDC, in 20 minutes). Apart from anything else, the cable would be so thick and heavy, no-one would be able to use it.

Anyway, we just don't need 500 mile range. As the article says hardly anyone does that sort of mileage on a regular basis and what's wrong with driving for a couple of hours and then recharging over coffee (or Tea) for 20 minutes before another 2 hours driving. We can do that now perfectly easily using todays tech.

For the future, lets use MotorRail - a high speed electric railway that'll compete with the airlines in time, safety and cost and that will allow you to take your car with you, charging as it goes. MW
