As for Better Place - first, Renault is not sold in the U.S. Second, while Better Place claims the battery swap technology is designed for battery packs from any manufacturer, I just can't imagine that in practice. The manufacturers want to optimize the battery pack shape and location based on the imaginations of their engineers. They don't want an outside force demanding the battery pack be in some kind of standardized shape or location. Is every battery swap station going to stock multiple instances of every known battery pack? What happens when someone gets a dud battery from a battery swap station?
The basic critique of Better Place is that they're assuming batteries will always be expensive. That's not a given.
