Sure terms like PHEV and series hybrid already existed, but the Chevy Volt didn't......

By building a vehicle that is like no other vehicle on the market, GM earned naming rights to call it whatever they wanted.

Folks trying to label the Volt using existing terms are ignoring the fact that the Volt is the only vehicle of its kind currently in production.
