Electric Vehicle News and Reviews

Electric vehicles (EVs) have come a long way in a short time. Barely a decade has passed since the ambitious Silicon Valley startup Tesla Motors introduced the world to an electric car capable of traveling more than 300 miles on a single charge. Since then, Elon Musk and Tesla have convinced many dubious onlookers that electric vehicles are not only here to stay, but that they can become the future of transportation.

Other automakers have joined the EV movement at very different rates. The Nissan Leaf, for example, debuted in 2010 and went on to become the best-selling all-electric vehicle in the world for a time. Competition from the BMW i3 followed, as well as the plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt and its all-electric successor the Chevy Bolt EV, but only the Tesla Model 3 has been able to steal the Leaf's crown. Heading into a new decade, electric vehicles are set to go from strength-to-strength, with new models like the Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro EV competing in the entry-level category and the Audi e-Tron, Porsche Taycan, or Jaguar I-PACE vying with Tesla at the top end of the market.

With entire classes of vehicle still lacking an electric version, such as pick-up trucks and affordable SUVs, there's huge potential for expansion and growth in the EV marketplace. For now, Tesla is still blazing the trail, but legacy manufacturers are lining up to electrify their fleets and promising startups like Rivian and Byton are waiting in the wings with exciting new electric vehicles.

The future is bright for EVs and you can keep up to date with all the latest stories right here on Torque News.

Back in July the EV blogosphere was awash with stories about the Plug-In Prius getting an increase in electric vehicle range. I didn’t comment or write about it as most of the stories correctly stated that the news was strictly a rumor.

On October 7th, 2015, Governor Jerry Brown, signed into law SB 350 which is an overall clean energy bill that has some significant commitments to clean transportation goals. This law should increase the number of Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment(EVSEs) in California which will enable Nissan Leafs, Chevy Volts, BMW I3s and others to travel more miles on electric power. Many Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment companies have expressed support for the statute and its ultimate passage.

According to reports, the Hyundai Sonata car has a 27 mile Electric Range before switching over to Hybrid mode. That is very good EV mileage for sure and only two other PHEVs will go further than that one Electric power.

Revolutions normally start with some sort of dissatisfaction. Is there any dissatisfaction with your transportation needs right now? Gas prices have come down but do you really like having to stop for gas after your spouse forgot to fill up the gas car?

One by one they are starting to fall. Clean Diesel is really not clean. The thorns are showing up on the rose and now the emissions chaos is striking BMW as well. Since BMW is the manufacturer of the I3 and has been investing in electric vehicle technology much more so than VW.

As the EV reporter here, I find the recent scandal involving VW and its falsification of emission data somewhat ironic. This scandal is now likely to become a criminal investigation in the USA and claimed the VW CEOs job as reported today on Bloomberg or maybe not.

Why do you have an Electric Vehicle? You could have been like 99% of the population and got yourself a gas car to drive around in but you are different. You had real reasons to be the early adopters in this niche auto category. You stepped up and jumped into a brand new modern day market. I’m interested in understanding the reasons why.

The big debate for me in the Electric Vehicle world is the one for small battery, big battery. Nobody may actually understand this debate but I’m sure many do. The two sides in this debate are EVs with small batteries vs. EVs with big batteries and which ones are better.

Based on the USA Governments figures of the average USA driver, he/she drives less than 40 miles a day in his/her car. Well if that is still the truth than the Ford C-Max Energi’s battery pack size of 20 miles should actually deliver 50% of this cars total miles. Is that even possible?
