Auto Express reports that Polestar is planning to build out a range of electric performance cars separate from Volvo. The models will use Volvo's SPA (Scalable Product Architecture) and CMA (Compact Modular Architecture) platform. According to the report, the first model could be shown sometime this year. It will be underpinned by the SPA platform. There are no details as to what the vehicle could look like or possible power output.
But why is Polestar developing performance electric vehicles? It comes down to their parent company, Chinese automaker Geely. According to a source, Geely wants to create a line-up that could rival the likes of the Volkswagen Group. Polestar is being positioned to be something along the lines of AMG by offering its own models and performance versions of Volvo cars.
Here is how the other brands under the Geely lineup will be positioned:
- Volvo: Rivaling Other Premium Brands
- Lynk & Co: Taking on the Mainstream Market in Europe, U.S., and China
- Geely: Taking on the Mainstream Market for China
