Don't be fooled by its modest exterior. The 2024 Jeep Compass Latitude packs a punch with its standard features and surprising performance.
I've been driving the 2024 Jeep Compass this week, and I'm really impressed. It's a great value for the price. Sure, it's not the best at everything, but it has a lot to offer. Every Compass comes with a strong engine, an automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. It's cheaper than some of its competitors, but they don't have an all-wheel drive standard. The Compass has different versions, from the basic Sport to the off-road Trailhawk. If you want a capable SUV without spending a lot, the Compass is a great choice. I am talking about an SUV that offers legendary off-road capabilities, interior refinement and high-tech features.
What's New In 2024?
The 2024 Jeep Compass isn't very different from last year's model, but it has some new looks and features. The front grille has a new design. While my Compass has 18-inch wheels I hear there will be new 19-inch wheels later on. The Trailhawk, which is the off-road version, has a new type of tire for rough terrain.
Trims, Pricing and Value
The 2024 Jeep Compass offers a variety of trims to suit different needs and budgets: Sport, Latitude, Latitude Lux, Limited and Trailhawk. The base Sport model starts at $27,495 and comes with standard features like all-wheel drive and a 10.1-inch touchscreen. For those seeking more luxury and convenience, the Latitude Lux trim is a great option. Priced at $33,490, it offers features such as heated seats, a heated steering wheel, remote start, and rain-sensing wipers.
The overall pricing of the Jeep Compass is competitive within the compact SUV segment. While the base Sport model is relatively affordable, higher trims like the Latitude Lux and Limited come with a premium price tag. It's important to consider your specific needs and budget when choosing a trim level.
While the Sport trim offers excellent value, I tend to think the Latitude Lux is the best overall choice for most buyers. It provides a balance of features, comfort, and affordability. I am driving the Latitude trim, but since the price with the Latitude Lux isn't that big this is why I would recommend the Latitude Lux. The additional amenities, such as heated seats and a heated steering wheel, enhance the driving experience, making the Compass a more enjoyable vehicle for daily use. If some of these are too much for you, go for the Latitude trim.
Engine and Power
The 2024 Jeep Compass is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine that delivers a respectable 200 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. This engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission that shifts smoothly and efficiently. All-wheel drive comes standard on all Compass models, providing improved traction and stability in various driving conditions.
The Trailhawk trim level is specifically designed for off-road enthusiasts. It features a low "crawler" gear ratio and a Rock mode that optimizes the vehicle's performance on challenging terrain. The Trailhawk also has additional features like increased ground clearance, skid plates, and off-road tires.
While the Compass may not have the sharpest handling characteristics of its class, it offers a comfortable and confident ride. The steering is well-weighted and provides good feedback. While there is some body lean during tight cornering, the Compass remains stable and controlled at higher speeds.
The Exterior Is Rugged and Stylish
The 2024 Jeep Compass offers a rugged and stylish exterior that reflects its off-road heritage. The front fascia features a bold seven-slot grille that is a signature design element of Jeep vehicles. The grille's design has been updated for the 2024 model year, giving it a more modern and aggressive look.
The Compass's sculpted body lines and flared fenders contribute to its muscular appearance. The available 19-inch alloy wheels add a touch of sophistication and enhance the vehicle's overall stance. The high ground clearance and rugged underbody protection further emphasize the Compass's off-road capabilities.
The Compass's exterior design is both practical and visually appealing. It provides a sense of adventure and versatility, making it a suitable choice for drivers who seek a vehicle that can handle various driving conditions.
A Comfortable and Functional Interior
The 2024 Jeep Compass offers a comfortable and functional interior that can comfortably accommodate four adult passengers. While the rear seat may not be the most spacious in its class, it provides adequate legroom and support for passengers of average height. The high seat bottoms help to keep passengers' legs fully supported, even on longer trips.
While the Compass's boxy exterior may suggest ample cargo space, it's not the most spacious in its segment. While it can handle a moderate amount of luggage, long trips with multiple passengers and lots of gear may require careful packing. The rear seatbacks fold down relatively flat, but the cargo area is not completely level.
The standard 10.1-inch touchscreen is easy to use and offers intuitive navigation and smartphone connectivity. The natural voice recognition feature allows for hands-free control of various functions, enhancing convenience and safety.
While it may not be the most spacious option in its class, it provides a balance of comfort, functionality, and technology. The interior design is simple yet stylish, with durable materials and a user-friendly layout.
Towing and Payload
The 2024 Jeep Compass offers a towing capacity of up to 2,000 pounds when properly equipped. This is a significant improvement compared to some of its competitors, such as the Honda CR-V and Volkswagen Tiguan. While the Compass is not a dedicated towing vehicle, it can handle moderate towing needs like hauling small trailers or boats.
It's important to note that the payload capacity of the Compass may be limited when towing heavy loads. The maximum payload capacity will vary depending on the trim level, options, and cargo weight. It's always recommended to consult the owner's manual for specific towing and payload specifications.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The 2024 Jeep Compass delivers respectable fuel economy for a compact SUV. The EPA estimates that the Compass will achieve 24 mpg in city driving and 32 mpg on the highway. This combined fuel economy rating of 27 mpg is an improvement over the previous generation model.
The Compass's improved fuel efficiency can be attributed to its new 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, which is both more powerful and more efficient than the naturally aspirated engine it replaced. The eight-speed automatic transmission also contributes to the Compass's fuel-efficient performance.
Having said this, my driving was mostly in the city, however it did include some highway driving as well. Yet, my real-world MPG after 206 miles is 22.7 miles per gallon.
Jeep Compass' Competition
The Jeep Compass competes with several other compact SUVs in the market, including:
- Honda HR-V: Known for its fuel efficiency and reliability.
- Toyota Corolla Cross: Offers a spacious interior and a reputation for quality.
- Mazda CX-5: Provides a stylish design and sporty driving dynamics.
- Subaru Crosstrek: Known for its all-wheel-drive capability and safety features.
While the Compass faces stiff competition, it offers several advantages that set it apart:
Off-Road Capability: The Compass, especially the Trailhawk trim, is better equipped for off-road adventures than many of its competitors.
Standard All-Wheel Drive: Unlike some competitors, the Compass comes standard with all-wheel drive, providing improved traction and stability in various weather conditions.
Brand Recognition: The Jeep brand has a strong reputation for reliability and durability, which can be a deciding factor for many buyers.
Unique Styling: The Compass's rugged and stylish exterior design differentiates it from other compact SUVs.
While the Jeep Compass may not be the best choice for everyone, its combination of off-road capability, standard all-wheel drive, and strong brand recognition make it a compelling option for those seeking a versatile and capable compact SUV.
Driving Dynamics and Handling
The 2024 Jeep Compass offers a comfortable and confident driving experience. Its suspension is tuned for a balance of comfort and control, making it suitable for both highway cruising and city driving. The steering is well-weighted and provides good feedback, making it easy to maneuver in tight spaces.
Jeep Compass remains stable and predictable at higher speeds. The all-wheel-drive system enhances traction and stability, making the Compass a confident vehicle to drive in various weather conditions.
To conclude this review, 2024 Jeep Compass is a versatile and capable compact SUV that offers a blend of off-road prowess, comfort, and technology. Its rugged exterior and capable all-wheel-drive system make it a suitable choice for those who seek a vehicle that can handle various driving conditions. While it may not be the most spacious or fuel-efficient option in its class, the Compass's unique blend of features and capabilities make it a compelling choice for many buyers.
