Tesla just registered 1,262 new Model 3 VINs: Highest VIN is 11,322

A Twitter page, that tracks Tesla Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) updates its page once a week and refers to NHTSA's website noting that currently, Tesla has 11,322 registered VINs.

Apparently NHTSA updates the vehicle VIN registration once a week and currently for Model 3 it stands for 11,322 registered VINs. This is the NHTSA page where it lists general information as well as recall information related to the 2018 Tesla Model 3.

It seems to me that Tesla has produced about about 2,000 to 2,500 Model 3s in January. This is not surprising as yesterday Torque News reporter John Goreham reported that January could be the turning point for Tesla Model 3 deliveries.

New sales figures show that "Tesla Model 3 deliveries jumped up to nearly 2,000 units this January of 2018. That should make the Model 3 the new electric vehicle sales leader as the new year begins. Tesla's increased production and deliveries are great news to anyone waiting on the reservations list, but part of why Tesla's Model 3 is number one this month is timing," Goreham reports.

It's about a week since they last registered 1,600 cars. Therefore, the production rate of Tesla Model 3 now seems to be around 1,000 cars per week.

On the other hand, some people say just because a VIN has been registered doesn't mean its been built. This is true, but look at the trend. If you have a trend line, it does say something about the production. As the VIN registration increases in it's acceleration, then the production has to. But you also have to break it down to per week.

How To Find Your Car's VIN

To find your car's WIN, look on the left of your car's windshield for your 17-character Vehicle Identification Number. Your VIN is also located on your car's registration card, and it may be shown on your insurance card.

Here is how Tesla Model 3s are made in Tesla's production factory.

It has already been 8 days since Tesla registered 1600 new VINs. If Tesla produced that many and went down to its minimum number of VINs they are comfortable with having, that’s 200 Model 3s per day. It will be interesting to see how long it will be before they register again since this was a smaller batch this time at 1200.

Based on some calculations I did last week, Tesla seems to be registering new VINs when they get down to between 2,000 to 2,500 unused VINs remaining. That would imply they produced around 7,560 to 8,060 cars before this latest batch was ordered (previous high VIN was 10,060). I would expect the reserve VIN threshold to rise over time, but probably not so soon. This is very good news about production rate, in my opinion.
