Americans are not the only ones who love pickup trucks as this new European vehicle survey found.
CarGurus, the online vehicle shopping marketplace, has analyzed the used car market in Britain and come up with a “desirability Score” based on its research. The group looked at every model with over 1,000 units for sale. Using its unique ability to analyze how many shoppers searched for and looked at a given model on its website of used vehicles for sale, CarGurus then developed a “Desirability Score” for each model. The biggest surprise is that it isn’t small, nimble European cars or MPVs that top the list. Rather, it is the Ford Ranger Pickup truck.
The Ranger was the top vehicle overall. Numbers 6, 7, and 10 were also pickup trucks, the Toyota Hilux, Nissan Navara, and Mitsubishi L200. Every other vehicle on the list, except the iconic Porsche 911, is a crossover. There were no cars in the top ten aside from the 911.
The list may better reflect what shoppers want, rather than what they might actually purchase. “When we’re buying our next car, we naturally consider the practicalities of the vehicle and search for the model that best fits our needs,” says James Drake of CarGurus. “But what if there were no restrictions? The CarGurus Desirability Score is the automotive equivalent of window shopping – it shows the models we are most curious about or desire, even if our circumstances make a purchase unrealistic." As the Spice Girls would put it,“Tell me what you want, what you really, really want.”
Ford is the number one automaker in sales in the United Kingdom followed by VW. However, the Ranger is not its top-selling model. The Ford Fiesta is the top-selling vehicle in the U.K. The Focus is Ford’s number two selling vehicle and the third overall seller in the U.K.
