Subaru discontinued the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. Here is why you won't miss it in 2024.
Subaru did not bring back the Crosstrek Hybrid when it gave the subcompact SUV a remodel. Why did Subaru discontinue the Crosstrek Hybrid now? Hybrid models are selling well and gaining popularity with new model shoppers.
The Crosstrek Hybrid was not selling well, and Subaru of America (SOA) needed to change its only Hybrid model. Slow sales are one reason why SOA chose to drop the Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid trim level.
The Crosstrek Plug-in Hybrid is fuel-efficient, so why doesn't Subaru sell more PHEV models? One problem is the Crosstrek Hybrid was too expensive for subcompact SUV shoppers.
What is the price of the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid?
The 2023 Crosstrek Hybrid has a starting price of $38,070, which includes destination and delivery fees ($1,225). You can buy a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Premium trim for $26,020, including dealer fees, which is $12,050 less than the Hybrid trim level. Customers aren't willing to pay for the difference in fuel mileage.
The Crosstrek Hybrid was only readily available in some U.S. states.
The Crosstrek Hybrid is only readily available in some states. The 2023 Crosstrek Plug-In Hybrid sells in every state, but customers who want the hybrid model must wait in most U.S. states when ordering.
Will Subaru bring back the Crosstrek Hybrid?
I reported last May that in an interview with Automotive News (by subscription), Garrick Goh, car line planning manager for the Crosstrek, says the next-generation Crosstrek will be available with new hybrid technology. But it will be better than the previous model.
Subaru announced they will begin making new EVs in mixed production with internal combustion vehicles at its Yajima plant in Japan by 2025. Automotive News says Subaru will begin offering hybridized powertrains sourced from Toyota by 2025.
The third-generation Subaru Crosstrek will likely get hybrid electric technology, but I'm speculating when that will be. I expect a new Crosstrek subcompact SUV Hybrid trim level to be added to the lineup by the 2025-2027 model year.
When they do, Subaru will need to price the new hybrid model closer to the standard models and make it affordable for customers. Subaru discontinued the 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid, but you won't miss it in 2024.
Garrick Goh, planning manager for the next-generation Crosstrek, says "it's probable" the third-generation Crosstrek will be available with new hybrid technology. But it will have a more extended all-electric range than the previous model. Stay tuned.

If Subaru of America wanted…
If Subaru of America wanted to sell more Hybrid Crosstreks they should have made them available.in more than 3 states. I was unwilling to travel 1000 miles just to test drive a Hybrid Crosstrek, and. I assume servicing would require a long trip.
As it was, I gave my local dealer instructions to call me when there was one available. Nobody called!

I'm flabbergasted by the poor composition in this article. It begins with repetition ad nauseum. And it never stops. It embarrasses me to imagine that the composition skills of a college educated native speaker are below that of the average 3rd grader.
I tried to buy a Subaru plug…
I tried to buy a Subaru plug-in hybrid Crosstrek. They wanted to put me on a multi-month wait list due to demand and shortages. I didn’t mind waiting for it for a couple of months, but they said they not only couldn’t guaranty that it would be delivered even in 4-5 months, but that they couldn’t give me clarity on a reliable timeframe even after I put money down. So, I was expected to put money down, pay above MSRP and they couldn’t tell me if I’d get my vehicle in 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, or longer? I said “no thanks” and bought a Toyota.
I suspect their lack of demand had more to do with this uncertainty than it did with interest in the vehicle. I have zero interest in all electric. The cost of electricity is going to soar over the coming 3-10 years which will materially change the economics of EVs.
