Subaru Corporation calls its all-new all-electric SUV Solterra. Check out new details and model launch date.

Subaru Corporation just announced its all-new battery-electric SUV, its new name, and release date. According to the recent announcement today, Subaru will call the first-ever all-electric SUV "Solterra," and it will launch in the U.S. by mid-2022. In April, Torque News revealed Subaru recently registered the trademark name "Solterra" in Europe.

Subaru's new EV SUV, jointly developed with Toyota, will be about the 2021 Forester compact SUV size. The new BEV will be the first Subaru vehicle to ride on a new e-Subaru Global Platform dedicated to its new all-electric model.

Subaru's new e-Subaru Global Platform is developed with the intention of offering more models that can be front-wheel drive, rear-drive, and all-wheel-drive by combining multiple modules and components. Subaru says "superior passive safety and vehicle stability" will be a core value built into the Solterra BEV dedicated platform.

The announcement by Subaru reveals the two automakers will combine their respective strengths. Subaru's long-accumulated all-wheel-drive technology and Toyota's outstanding vehicle electrification technology create a new Solterra "with attributes that only an all-electric vehicle can offer."

The name "Solterra" was created by joining the word "Sol" and "Terra," the Latin words for the "Sun" and the "Earth," respectively. Subaru says the name was given to the EV to "appreciate mother nature and further advance the form of coexistence with it."

The Solterra will be distinctly Subaru. The Japanese automaker will give its customers the traditional Subaru Forester, Outback, and Crosstrek SUV's go-anywhere capabilities, but in an all-electric vehicle.

Subaru says the 2022 Subaru Solterra EV SUV will be a global vehicle and added to the SUV lineup along with Forester, Outback, Crosstrek, and Ascent SUVs in the U.S. and North America.

The Solterra will be a compliance car for California's emissions, where Subaru sells many of its all-wheel-drive vehicles. It will have limited availability, and Subaru will also offer Solterra in some eastern U.S. states.

The 2022 Subaru Solterra EV will go on sale in Japan and the U.S. and then be released in Canada, Europe, and China by the middle of 2022. Torque News will bring new information as it's available.

Hooray Subaru! I am waiting for the Solterra to replace my loyal, excellent, albeit gas thirsty , Forester XT. The Solterra would be Subaru second all-electric car. The credit for being the first goes to the maverick little Stella which was assembled around 2009. Couple hunderds were sold to the Japanese Postal Service. It wasn't a commercial success...

I am pleased that Subaru is going electric !!!! The importance of helping the environment is essential and Subaru must show its commitment to this. I understand that the Solterra will be coming next year- is it smaller than the Forester? I would love to purchase an electric Outback- any idea when that might happen? Thanks
