Tesla Model Y

After keeping silent about the issue for days, Elon Musk has finally acknowledged the launch of the refreshed Model Y. However, Musk's endorsement is definitely lacking in enthusiasm.

Elon Musk is one of the most active social media users. The Tesla CEO comments on everything, including US politics, international politics, history, culture, video games, vaccines, rockets, and tunnels, on a daily basis.

However, despite his extensive social media presence, Musk has been bafflingly silent about the launch of the refreshed Model Y.

The Model Y is now the world's best-selling vehicle, generating more than fifty billion dollars in revenue annually for Tesla.

However, despite the Model Y’s contribution towards Tesla’s success, for the past few days, Elon Musk has been suspiciously quiet about the biggest refresh in the vehicle’s history since it was unveiled back in 2019.

That’s at least until now. Elon Musk has finally broken his silence regarding the new Model Y. However, his comments about the vehicle are definitely less than enthusiastic.

An X user, Tesla King, shared a 4-minute ASMR video walkthrough of the refreshed Model Y with the new glacier blue paint.

The video, which was filmed in China, shows all the changes to the Model Y, including the new on-screen gear selector, physical turn stalks, powered rear seat, redesigned front fascia, headlights, and front light bar.

We’ve already covered a more in-depth run-through of everything Tesla changed in the refreshed Model Y.

Returning to Elon Musk, after seeing the video by Tesla King, the Tesla CEO shared it with his 210 million followers.

However, Musk only retweeted the video without giving any commentary, highlighting any changes, giving any additional details, or emphasizing the importance of the new launch.

This is surprising given that Elon Musk is Tesla’s main salesperson. Musk is so confident in this role that he has even disbanded the entire media relations team at Tesla.

However, despite being Tesla’s biggest promoter, Elon Musk seems less than enthusiastic to talk about the new Model Y.

Interestingly, in the days since Tesla launched the refreshed Model Y, Elon has already made more than a hundred X posts; however, the Tesla CEO has only done one lousy retweet about the refreshed Model Y.

Why is Elon Musk so quiet about the refreshed Model Y?

Since he bought Twitter in 2022 and changed its name to X, some have said that Elon has lost his enthusiasm for Tesla.

Musk appears to be more focused on politics, X, his artificial intelligence startup (xAI), and his rocket company (SpaceX).

This wouldn’t have been too much of an issue; however, as I have already said, Elon Musk is Tesla’s primary spokesperson. Without Musk frequently communicating about the EV maker, he’s letting others shape the narrative for his company.

One argument I’ve heard from Elon Musk fans is that the Tesla CEO is not mentioning the Model Y refresh that much to prevent harming the current Model Y sales.

This is the classic Osborne effect: if a company announces a new product too early, sales of the current generation model suffer greatly.

I can see a case for this argument. However, even before the refreshed Model Y launch, Elon Musk barely discussed Tesla and its vehicles.

Specifically, if we take out a discussion about Tesla's full self-driving effort, Musk mentions Tesla and its vehicles less than 5 percent of the time he communicates in public.

Interestingly, just before he bought Twitter, almost half of Elon’s public communication was about Tesla; however, fast-forward a few years, and the EV maker seems like an afterthought.

Another point is that even though Elon Musk no longer seems interested in Tesla, the EV maker is still the source of the largest portion of his wealth.

Not only that, but the money he earns by selling Tesla’s stock is funding many of the other ventures Elon Musk is pursuing ahead of the EV maker.

At this point, I can hear some Elon Musk fans writing how much Musk posts on X doesn’t directly correlate with how much work time he spends on those issues.

I agree with that sentiment. However, as I said, Elon Musk is Tesla’s biggest salesman. He has over 210 million followers and a large platform to advance Tesla’s mission. He’s passing up an enormous opportunity to help Tesla’s sales by barely discussing the company.

One piece of information to support this claim is that Tesla, after so many years, posted its first year-over-year sales decline just a few weeks ago.

Tesla delivered a little over 1.7 million vehicles in the whole of 2024. This is less than in 2023, when Tesla delivered 1.8 million vehicles.

This might not seem like a big deal, given that Tesla has long been production-constrained rather than demand-constrained.

However, at the beginning of 2024, Tesla said the company had an installed production capacity of 3 million vehicles annually. This means currently, Tesla can only generate enough sales for 60% of its installed vehicle production capacity.

Tesla has also delayed expansion projects at Giga Berlin and Giga Shanghai, indefinitely pushing back Giga Mexico construction, and has halted the search for new production sites.

Personally, I find this trend worrying, and I believe it would help Tesla immensely if Musk talked more about Tesla. However, please let me know what you think in the comments.

It might help if Tesla kept it's word and paid him their agreed on Contract things would be different.
I'm aware that a new contract has been negotiated. I've seen nothing about anything being paid out on the original contract that was held up for years

Maybe it's because he recognizes that the Y refresh isn't actually that much of a change? If you loved the Y before, you'll probably still love the new Y. But if you didn't love the old Y, the new one isn't going to do anything for you. And if you liked the Y, but are tired of seeing them everywhere, and don't want a car that looks like every other Y in the parking lot, the new one also isn't going to please you.

I have heard that left of political centre EV owners & potential EV owners are stating that they will not buy a TESLA because they believe that Elon Musk is too right of centre of their beliefs. So Elon Musk not promoting TESLA as much might be better for left of centre voters.
The reality is that TESLA is designed & manufactured by thousands of people with different political viewpoints & what Elon Musk says on political issues is unimportant.
I am sure that TESLA competitors realize that TESLA is seriously outselling their inferior products & they believe that criticizing Elon Musk & linking that criticism to TESLA might slow down TESLA Sales,
