Tesla’s FSD Software is Struggling to Adopt to the Cybertruck’s 4-Wheel Steering – Owners Report the Moving Rear Wheels are Getting Curbed by FSD

The Cybertruck, with its first Tesla 4-wheel steering setup, appears to be experiencing a unique issue while operating on FSD. Owners report the Cybertruck’s rear wheels are getting curbed while making a turn.

After a few months of waiting, this September, Tesla finally released FSD for Cybertruck. The owners celebrated the update, at the very least, since they had already paid thousands of dollars to purchase the capability.

FSD in Cybertruck, like in any other Tesla vehicle, has mixed reviews. People who expect it to be “fully self-driving” are disappointed, whereas people who see it as driver-assist software are impressed.

This is all normal. However, as the first Tesla with 4-wheel steering, the Cybertruck appears to be experiencing a unique issue when driving in Full Self-Driving (Supervised).

A Cybertruck owner, Lev Shamay, first brought this challenge to the public's attention. On the TeslaCybertruck group on Facebook, Lev shared, “Does your FSD also hit a lot of curbs?”

This issue has been widely reported, especially with the latest FSD 12.5 version, which has a habit of getting too close to the curb during turns or even while driving straight.

This is a problem for Tesla’s entire vehicle lineup running the FSD 12.5 software. However, below his post, Lev added, “Edit: mainly when turning right, the turn is too tight, sometimes hitting the curb with rear wheels.

When making a turn, at least if you are driving forward, the fear is not to curb the front wheel on the side you are turning. Since the rear wheels follow the path set by the front wheels, the rear wheels are largely safe.

However, it appears that the Cybertruck’s steering rear wheels are getting equally damaged during a curbing incident.

Below Lev’s post, several Cybertruck owners replied that they have also experienced curbed wheels due to the FSD software.

In response to Lev, another Cybertruck owner, Zachary Furlow, responded, “Yes, I routinely have to disengage FSD to avoid it clipping a curb. It’s already hit a curb once and scuffed up the tire and center cap.”

Tabraiz Khan expanded on the issue, attesting that the curbing problem is not limited to left turns, writing, “Yes, FSD takes turns too tight. It doesn't matter if it's left or right turns.”

Another Cybertruck owner, Laurence M. LoScalzo Jr., added, “Yes, either hit or almost the curb, left and right... I think maybe the software needs to be adjusted for the 4-wheel steering.”

More than half of the comments by the Cybertruck owners support Lev's original post that their Cybertrucks turn too tight and have already curbed the wheels or that they had to take over to stop the software from curbing the wheels.

Other Cybertruck owners, who are new to FSD, raised even more grave concerns, such as running a red light. One owner says the FSD drove so close to the highway median that it almost ran straight into it.

In addition to the 4-wheel steering, Cybertruck owners say there is a problem with the Cybertruck’s other unique feature—steer-by-wire.

Another Cybertruck owner, John Zweber, writes, “For some reason, I don't think the FSD takes into account the steering by wire. Mine will make sudden corrections.”

Overall, in the first couple of weeks, since Tesla released FSD for Cybertruck owners, it appears that most of them are underwhelmed.

As of now, we can’t say for certain if Tesla is aware of these Cybertruck-specific FSD issues. And, famously, the EV maker doesn’t respond to media requests making it difficult to get you better information. However, we’ll be sure to keep you posted if we get an update.
