Looking for the latest summarized update on the new Tesla 4680 battery design and function? Here’s a recently released must-see video that puts what is known in an informative and non-biased perspective about what is going on with the 4680 battery today.
A Little Tesla Review
Over the past few months we’ve reported a significant amount of information about comparisons between the 18650, 2170 and 4680 battery cell as well as Tesla battery cell secrets explained by well-known and highly regarded experts in the field of EV technology.
Of especial interest was the evolution of the 4680 battery cell that was expected to be a natural upgrade for models carrying its predecessor 2170 battery cell as explained in these very informative videos providing 4680 updates of Tesla’s next generation battery cell.
In the meantime, the popularity and interest in Tesla vehicles powered by these battery cells has grown significantly as performance reports demonstrated how well the 4680 battery performed in a multi-vehicle EV race against Tesla competitors; and, an outstanding show of what a modified Model 3 Plaid can do in an uphill race on Pikes Peak.
And more recently we’ve learned how that Tesla FSD is tested and tweaked by AI experts who show really just how big a challenge it is to create updates to FSD that are drawing closer to true full autonomy.
All of this of course has led to some record breaking Tesla preorders without guaranteed delivery dates, and promises that eventually more affordable models of Tesla will become available.
What Everything Hinges On
Whether we are talking about performance; self-driving and safety features; or, vehicle model availability, it all really hinges on what is going on and will be achieved with the latest generation 4680 battery cell. Production costs, materials sustainability, and vehicle model logistics all weigh in on a teeter totter balance that is uncertain…but never dull.
That said, to continue on with the most recent updates available, here is an informative video recently released that summarizes in a useful perspective where the new Tesla 4680 battery design and function stands today.

It's a well done promotional
It's a well done promotional video, and was pretty accurate when it was made. But the information is 6-8 months old. Much still holds true, but there is a real uncertainty about if the scaled production of the 4680 batteries is working yet at the Kato rd. facility. The Model S Plaid + was going to be the halo car that introduced the 4680 batteries, but the Plus model was cut. The next Tesla production vehicles that were going to use the 4680 batteries were the revised Model Y and Cybertruck coming from the new Gigafactories in Germany and Texas. Each with their own 4680 battery factories on site. And while production of the new models looks like it will happen in a few months, there have been rumors that the ramp up of 4680 battery production has not happened, and that the first models will use the same 2170 batteries as other Model Ys. The Cybertruck, due to be built next year in Texas is designed to rely on the 4680 batteries, so hopefully production bugs get worked out before then.
