Consumer reports just listed Tesla vehicles as the cheapest to maintain of any other vehicle, over 10 years of ownership. Here's the entire list.
Tesla Vehicles - Cheapest To Maintain
Tesla vehicles are the cheapest vehicles to maintain, according to Consumer Reports - for 10 years of ownership. For those who own a Tesla, this probably won't be a surprise. The only maintenance I've done is to replace a windshield that got smacked by a large rock while on the freeway in about 20 months of driving my 2022 Model 3 RWD.
Here is the breakdown from Consumer Reports:
- Tesla: $4,035
- Buick: $4,900
- Toyota: $4,900
- Lincoln: $5,040
- Ford: $5,400
- Chevrolet: $5,550
- Hyundai: $5,640
- Nissan: $5,700
- Mazda: $5,800
- Honda: $5,850
There is a reason Tesla vehicles - and largely, any EV are such a low cost to maintain. There are far fewer parts on an electric vehicle.
A bonus that can be had with an EV is if you live near a location that has free charging and can charge there. For instance, the Harmon's near me has free charging and one fast charging station with a CCS charger. I can charge there in under an hour once per week and don't pay for fuel for my Tesla.

What Maintenance For An EV?
What is the maintenance for an EV? Well, it's actually pretty straightforward. You need to refill the washer fluid about every 6 months. This is very cheap to do, and you can even make your own if you want.
Tires are to be rotated about every 6,250 miles, with new tires coming anywhere between 20,000 to 60,000 miles, depending on your tires and driving habits, along with the weather conditions.
Eventually, you'll need to replace the air filter, and way down the road, you may need to have the brakes checked if you use them a lot. This can be checked every 2 years.
If you use regenerative braking most of the time, you'll likely never need to get the brakes checked. But, every 4 years, it's worth a quick service check for brake fluid just to be sure. If you live in a cold climate, it's worth checking the brake calipers every year.
There is an A/C desiccant bag that can be checked every 4 years.
That's about it for maintenance.
EVs have an advantage over gas cars, with far fewer parts and not having to fill up with gasoline. If you can charge at home overnight, you'll pay a lot less for fuel.
Because I have a lot of free charging near where I live, it made a lot of sense for me to get an EV.
