CATL - New Battery to Charge 250 Miles of Range in 10 Minutes
CATL is supposedly going to be producing a battery that will charge 250 miles of range in 10 minutes, sometime in 2024. The battery is said to begin production this year, 2023, and will then ship the following year.
There have been many announcements about batteries and what they will do, but you have to take these announcements with a grain of salt. Until the batteries are actually in a vehicle being charged, everything is speculation.
I've heard many times that Toyota is producing a solid state battery that is going to "change the game" and this always ends up being false. I do believe solid state batteries and batteries that are much better than those available today will eventually come, but it will just take time, research, and progress - not something that happens quickly.
CATL is one company that you can take such statements with a little more belief. Their batteries are primarily LFP batteries, which are cheaper and have a better chemistry and stability. Cheaper batteries and faster charging are a very good thing for EVs. If the battery degrades slower than others, that is even better.

When Is This and Other Batteries Going To Happen?
I do expect CATL to release this battery next year. Tesla has even said that the Model 3 will qualify for the EV tax credit until the end of 2023, however, once 2024 hits and Tesla uses this new battery from CATL, then the Model 3 may not qualify for the tax credit anymore.
Rumors continue to circulate on the Model 3 being refreshed to Project Highland, but so far, there hasn't been any indication of that. Tesla will continue to make updates to this vehicle, but I don't expect it to be a bunch of changes at once.
Hopefully Tesla can advance battery technology as well. Fast charging is incredibly important for EVs. There needs to be abundant and cheap charging. I think Tesla will save these new batteries for its compact vehicles, which I expect to begin deliveries toward the end of 2025.
Batteries are one of the reasons people don't buy an EV. People are worried about battery degradation, have range anxiety, and understand that batteries perform much worse in the cold weather. I think these concerns will slowly be addressed over time, however, and one day, getting a new battery for your EV will be as simple as swapping one in and out of your phone.
