GMC will unveil the long awaited 2022 GMC Hummer Supertruck on Tuesday evening. We have the lowdown on how you can watch it and where the all-new vehicle will be built.
GMC has been teasing the 2022 GMC Hummer EV for months and Tuesday we will finally get to see it, I mean see all of it. We have seen its outline, its expansive glass roof and it even seen it move like a crab. Tuesday night during the Voice and the World Series, we will get to see the supertruck and perhaps its SUV version. GMC will also be revealing it on its website and on its Youtube Channel.
GMC is promising that the HUMMER EV will be revolutionary for the brand. GMC is known for great trucks and SUVs, but GMC says that the Hummer EV will deliver extraordinary on-road performance and unprecedented off-road capability – all with zero-emissions. After such a long wait and with expectations set so high, GMC can’t afford to overpromise and underdeliver.
Renaming the GMC Hummer Plant
GM is even renaming the plant where the all-important GMC Hummer EV will be built. Known forever as the Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center or D-Ham, the plant will now be called Factory ZERO. Once the home to huge Cadillacs and other luxury sedans, the sprawling plant is being switched to an all-electric vehicle assembly plant. GM says the name Factory ZERO reflects the significance of this facility in advancing GM’s zero-crashes, zero-emissions and zero-congestion future.
The same factory has been trusted to build halo vehicles for GM before. This plant, which sits partly in Detroit and partly in Hamtramck, was home to the Chevrolet Volt. It is where GM specially trained workers to handle its first mass-produced electric vehicles with precision.
“Factory ZERO is the next battleground in the EV race and will be GM’s flagship assembly plant in our journey to an all-electric future,” said Gerald Johnson, GM executive vice president of Global Manufacturing. “The electric trucks and SUVs that will be built here will help transform GM and the automotive industry.”
Huge Investment in Electric Vehicles
GM is spending $2.2 billion to upgrade and retool Factory ZERO to build the 2022 GMC Hummer EV as well as the Cruise Origin. The Origin is an electric, self-driving, shared vehicle. Both will be built on GM’s Ultium battery platform. Ultium is designed to be flexible enough to build a wide range of EVs including cars, trucks and SUVs. Word is that the Hummer will be built as both an SUV and truck, and both from the same Ultium platform. This is the largest single investment in a plant in GM history. When it reopens, the facility will eventually have more than 2,200 workers.
“This manufacturing plant will be the epitome of GM’s vision by sustainably manufacturing electric and shared autonomous vehicles that can help reduce crashes, emissions and congestion,” said Dane Parker, GM chief sustainability officer.
GMC will unveil the 2022 GMC Hummer EV supertruck at 8:00 pm EST. GMC will also start taking reservations for the new truck then. Production of the GMC HUMMER EV pickup will begin in late 2021.
