Another GMC Yukon Denali bites the dust.
While researching the GMC Yukon, I ran across another story about a 2022 GMC Yukon Denali that needs a new engine. Luckily for Andrea Woods (@andrawoods), who owns the SUV, her vehicle is still under warranty. It's sitting at the dealer waiting for a new engine.
Her TikTok page shows her 2022 Denali being loaded on the tow truck, which will take it to the GMC dealer. While it's being driven onto the truck, you can hear the engine that sounds like it's on its last legs. There is clearly catastrophic engine failure.
Andrea says, "I bought my new GMC Yukon Denali in 2022, and it hit just 31,000 miles. The engine started making a terrible sound, and now she's at the dealership waiting for a new motor. Thank goodness for a warranty."
Picture yourself trading in a 2016 GMC Yukon Denali that you were pleased with and had no major problems. It has over 100,000 miles, so it's time to look for a new model. You go to the GMC dealer where you purchased it and have had it serviced regularly. You find a new black 2022 Yukon Denali that is perfect.
You drive it for two years; it's been reliable, it has 33,000 miles, and then the engine starts making a horrific sound one day. You are afraid to drive it to the dealer to have it checked out and call a tow truck.
The dealer tells you it's had a major engine failure and will need a new engine. You are unhappy about your new Denaili but thankful it's still covered under the manufacturer's 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Andrea cared for her vehicles and had the GMC dealer do all the scheduled maintenance.
She says, "The dealership did the routined oil changes. They couldn't tell me why this happened."
Does the GMC Yukon Have Engine Issues?
Recent reports indicate significant problems with GM's 6.2-liter engine, particularly the "L87" variant. Many owners report sudden and catastrophic engine failures due to bearing issues.
The problem is so bad that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is conducting an ongoing investigation into the effects of this engine on a large number of GM trucks and SUVs.
Key points about the issues:
- Engine failure reports: Numerous complaints have surfaced regarding sudden and unexpected engine failures in GM vehicles with the 6.2L V8, often attributed to bearing failures.
- NHTSA investigation: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has investigated potential engine failure issues with the 6.2-liter L87 V8 engine found in Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac trucks and SUVs.
- Impact on owners: Affected owners whose vehicles are not under warranty face significant repair costs. To get the SUVs repaired, there are long wait times for replacement engines due to a shortage of parts.
In a discussion thread on Reddit, Steve says,
"I have a 2023 Cadillac Escalade with less than 10,000 miles. The vehicle has been properly serviced and maintained. While the vehicle was in motion on the highway, the engine seized. A loud boom sound followed by rattling, shaking, and loss of power. An extremely scary situation."
"Based on my research, I have discovered that I am not the only person this has happened to. I have asked GM to buy back the vehicle, but they have gone cold and have not acknowledged the incident. In addition, I received an email from Onstar with a great diagnostic report."
"No check engine light or any indication of unsafe operation. I have contacted a major law firm specializing in this kind of litigation as lead plaintiff."
jdw2000z28 says, I do not own one, but I am quite familiar with this issue. Starting in 2022, we began seeing failures like this with the 6.2. I've personally replaced 6 in the last 2 years. In total, we've probably replaced about ten 6.2s since 2022.
All but one of those had the exact same scenario as yours. Just cruising along, no warnings, no nothing. And suddenly, the engine stops. They've all had spun rods and/or main bearings. I'm part of a GM technician's Facebook group, and nearly every day, someone posts about yet another locked-up 6.2.
If I've seen 10, they've also likely seen 5, 10, 15 plus of these engines locking up. I'm willing to bet thousands are affected by this issue.
Final Thoughts and Questions for GMC Owners
There is a class-action lawsuit against General Motors concerning engine failure in General Motors vehicles with 6.2-liter engines. Those models include the following models:
- 2019-2024 Cadillac Escalade
- 2019-2024 Chevrolet Escalade
- 2019-2024 Chevrolet Suburban
- 2019-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe
- 2019- 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500
- 2019-2024 GMC Sierra 1500
- 2019-2024 GMC Yukon/Yukon XL
Owners of these vehicles can go here for more information.

Bought 2024 GMC Yukon SLT. Drove 341 miles and engine starts having no power with numerous warnings. Brought to dealership and was told Valve body was bad. The service department had no timeframe of part to replace faulty valve body. Yukon sat in service for 2 months before part found and replaced. Lemon Law vehicle. What a night mare dealing with GMC.

I have a 2023 Yukon Denali XL bought from the dealership brand new and as I was driving down the busy Interstate going 70 miles/ hr without warning my engine just shut down. I was fortunately able to coast to the right shoulder and call a tow truck to tow my vehicle home as the dealership was closed. To make matters worse worse… I called the dealership once they opened the following day and asked that they make arrangements for my vehicle to be towed there for diagnostics and repair, well unfortunately the dealership was of no help and I had to then call to arrange once again for tow service to the dealership. If you’ve ever had to have this done, the wheels are locked up so they pretty much have to unconventionally pull the vehicle up on the flatbed by way of using dish soap. Makes me wonder what damage could be caused by this method.
Well after weeks of having my vehicle the diagnosis came and there was metal in the oil which resulted in not only 1 but 2 engines being put in by the time I received my vehicle back over a 2.5 month period. GMC was of NO help during this entire process. Totally unacceptable when you pay $100,000 for a vehicle. I have driven Yukon Denalis for over 20 years and this will absolutely be my last one.

I took my 2019 GMC SIERRA to a dealership to replace the camshaft and lifters. While test driving the truck, after the repair, the engine sizes on the mechanic and the warranty company informs me that they will no cover the engine due to the dealership failure to put oil in the engine after the repair.
It's been over a year and I had to file a lawsuit because dealership will not give me my truck.

I too have this issue currently. Bought a brand new 2023 GMC Denali Yukon XL. 14 months in and about 30k in miles, the vehicle suddenly shifted from drive to neutral on its own while I was driving 75 miles per hour on a California freeway. The vehicle engine seized and I could not power forward with the gas pedal and by the time I drifted off the freeway, the steering wheel was not turning properly. I was stuck on the side of the freeway with my tail end of truck partially blocking a busy on ramp in the 4pm traffic. I had my young daughter in the car so I was super nervous about getting hit. No error codes at all came up. Had the car towed to GMC, they said the engine seized and found metal in the oil. I had the car oil serviced only by GMC and the oil was changed only 5 days prior to this incident. They now have had my car for 40 days as they are replacing the entire engine. Barely any communication from them on the progress of the repair. Super frustrating experience with my first GMC vehicle.

Same engine seize problem on new Denali with 13,000 miles.
Took them 82 days to fix, no loaner, offered peanuts for rental reimbursement. They won’t acknowledge or inform of problems and wouldn’t give paperwork on what was done until I sued. Now going through the courts. Horrible company to deal with. Don’t buy this car.

Same issues with 5.3 liter. Anything with active fuel mgmt. and DOD(displacement on demand) Just spent 5000.00 having motor rebuilt. Died with no warning at all. This has been going on since 2009 at least and Chevy has known all along yet still put them on the lots to be sold. Chevys are junk now because they’re to busy trying to squeeze out another mile of gas mileage with gimmick motors. A once great company now a joke.

I have a 2019 Sierra Denali with the 6.2 and 10 speed, just turned over 175,000 miles and it's never even hiccuped. Never had the plugs changed, still runs like new and you can't hear it running half the time. My father has a 2020 Escalade, same engine with zero issues. I previously had a 2015 GMC Sierra Denali with the 6.2, sold at 240k miles with never any issues. I've never met anyone with 6.2 issues, and I ask every person I can find at gas stations, restaurants, anywhere I see someone with a 6.2 vehicle and have the opportunity to strike up a quick conversation. This cant be that common.

I have a 2022 Yukon Denali. My wife was driving it one day and had a sudden loss of power while driving in the left hand lane of a highway. She barely managed to get it off the road. She was about an hour from home and had to have it towed to our dealer. They couldn't get it into neutral and had to drag it onto the bed of the truck. I was stunned to hear that it needed a new engine. It has been sitting at the dealer for a month now...still waiting on the new engine!

This happened to me two weeks ago. I own 2023 GMC Yukon Denali XL. My husband was driving and we were going about 60 mph when we heard a screaming sound and then my vehicle randomly shifted to neutral. My husband hosted off the highway onto a side street and put the vehicle in Park. We could not get it to start again and had to have it towed to the nearest dealership. A couple days later, the mechanic called us and said we had catastrophic engine failure. I was shocked, there was only 18,500 miles on my vehicle. my Yukon has been in the shop now for two weeks and there is no telling when I will get it back, the mechanic told us there are 12 vehicles ahead of mine that are waiting for the same engine. Needless to say we are very frustrated.

Hello
I’m the 2nd owner of a 2022 GMC Yukon Denali. I purchased the vehicle with about 27k miles on it 2 years ago. Currently it has 72,000 miles on it and has always been maintained on schedule at the dealership. I’ve never had any issues. It left my family and me stranded on the evening of Thursday, January 23, 2025, on I-40 East near Crossville, TN.
While driving, the engine suddenly failed and shut off completely. I was informed that the engine "threw a rod" and locked up, which is a dangerous and alarming situation. I was fortunate to safely maneuver the vehicle to the side of the road, but this was an extremely frightening experience.
I have been advised that the vehicle requires a full engine replacement, which is understandably concerning given the low mileage. Additionally, after doing some research, I have found that this issue appears to be affecting other customers with similar or even lower mileage, suggesting there may be an underlying issue with these engines.
The engine is currently on back order. I did receive a call this pass Friday that there is a tracking number for the parts. I also have a case open with GM on this issue. We are pushing for them to cover the cost. This is rediculous!!
Best regards,
Darrell

This just happened to my brand new 2023 GMC Denali XL (20,000 miles). We haven’t even had it a year. I was on the interstate last Monday and my car completely shut off; I had to make my way to the side of the road (going 70 mph). It wouldn’t turn on again, had it towed to the nearest GMC dealer and got a call the next day that I need a new engine. And to top it off, GMC will only cover $45 a day for a rental. Well um, that doesn’t fit my families needs (hence why we bought a suburban). We haven’t even a call with our case manager tomorrow. We’ll see what the 4th person says on the issue. In most of these cases GMC should buy back all the vehicles for what people paid.

I am having the same problem with my 2021 Yukon Denali. I have taken it to the dealership 3 times already & they claim they don't hear the rattling noise like I do. It started right after an oil change. I heard a big boom sound from my SUV while driving & then came the rattle afterwards. No check engine lights or any icon letting me know something is wrong. GM needs to fix our vehicles. My vehicle is still under 100,000 miles. No motor or transmission should be going out so early. Thanks for sharing the information.

We own a 2018 cadillac escalade esv platinum .We are in Arizona last year on March and I was driving on 10 East and my motor started to make nosey and shaking..At that time my Cadillac Escalade was only 107k miles. We got to the side of the road and called the towing...waiting 2 hours for it and finally we found the closest Cadillac dealer in Tucson. The told us we have to wait few weeks for diagnosis..we drive from Minnesota for family vacation...was a horrible experience..I ended up to find another GMC dealer and Brandon got us in shop next day...Finally they told me the few lifters felt and damaged the motor and also my transmission got problems because I was driving few miles to get to exit because was not safe on the highway 10 to wait for towing...I have to send my family to airport and fly to Minnesota. I was waiting for the dealer invoice...first they told me will be around $12k..if they will be able to just repair..after I left the car and got home to Minnesota the dealer sent me another estimate to replace the motor and transmission because wasn't possible to repair..Was a very stressful situation because the car was in Tucson and we are in Minnesota...I take a credit line and agreed to give the dealer a green line for replace...The dealer told us will take maximum two months...I called after two months and they told me they still waiting for a refurbished motor from GM...and buy Father's day will be done..I purchased the tickets ahead..and when I called closest to the dates..the dealer told me the work it's not done yet...we agreed by July 10 2024 evry fing will be ready for pick up..We got to change the tickets and fly to Phoenix . Renting a car and called we are on the way to Tucson to pick up my Cadillac Escalade..the dealer started to say they have to test for one day and to be sure everything is ready for long drive...Next day I called several times after the dealer response and told me they need one more week...very disappointed and stressful situation..we ended to rent the car for longer time and spending time and money for hotels..after one week we just drive to dealer and the car wasn't ready...they told us one more day..I asked the dealer to cover my rental spending because it's not my problem the car wasn't ready..we ended up to get a car just for one day rent from the dealer...Next day when I got to Quebedeaux GMC dealer in Tucson to pay the second part they told us the total amount is $25400...My wife was shocked and me also..we didn't have another option...because they will not release my SUV if we don't pay the full amount...Finally we got in the car and drived to Phoenix and rented a hotel to sleep because was late night and kids and wife needed a shower and to sleep ..In the morning I got early up and decided to open the hood and take a look if evry fing was good..I found out some cooling tube wasn't secured and missing some parts underneath..I called several times Quebedeaux dealer and after discussing wat i saw..they told me to drive back to Tucson...another day loosed and very stressful day..the shop secured whith zippers the parts..we left in the evening Tucson to Minnesota..After few days drive I got to my shop to change the oil in Minnesota and my mechanic said some parts are missing 😅..I called Quebedeaux and told dealer about missing parts and he told me I have to proof the parts was before they started to work on my Cadillac Escalade...the worst experience on my 43 years..I got very disappointed about GM service and quality and how they treat my family..we got broke whith this Cadillac Escalade Platinum spending $25500 on repair. I will never advise my family and friends to buy from GM cars...I was treated not fair and experience the worst customer expectations.

I have a 2013 Chevy truck with 5.3 engine. Just spent 5000.00 having motor rebuilt. My understanding is starting in 2009? these motors have active mgmt. and DOD( displacement on demand) cuts from 8 cylinders to 6 to 4. The mechanic says he makes a living rebuilding these motors. Truck was running perfect and with no warning at all it cut off driving down the road. Acted like it ran out of gas. Push rods were bent, valves were bad, oil pump bad, etc…..Chevrolet has known of this issue for years and years yet they still sell trucks with this motor, no recall, nothing. They do not care. Tell everyone not to buy a Chevy with 5.3 or 6.2 liter motor. My mistake not researching before buying but for the rest of my life I will tell everyone not to buy Chevy. I had a Ford F150 for almost 20 years and NEVER did anything other than battery, brakes, and tires. They put Chevy to shame.

I've had over 20 suburbans in the last 40 years. Most recently I had a 2021 suburban high country with a 6.2. After four years and 27,000 miles the fuel control module failed and the car stalled while driving over a drawbridge. I had it towed to the terrible local dealer who replaced the fuel control module with the same faulty fuel control module. Subsequently a year later, the car stalled again while driving through a car wash. I took it back to the same terrible local dealer Greco in Fort Lauderdale. They finally realized there was a recall and replaced it with the most current fuel control module. These cars are too dangerous and risky to put your family in. I'll never have a suburban again, which is sad.
