My 2024 GMC Sierra’s Transmission Died at 6,500 Miles, I’ve Been Waiting For the Dealer To Get Parts For Over 60 Days

A 2024 GMC Sierra owner has a failed 10-speed transmission that is only 6,500 miles in. The truck needs a new transmission, but the dealer doesn't have the right parts. Here is Matheus's frustrating story and what Sierra owners need to know.

Another GM 10-speed transmission bites the dust.

Imagine owning a new GMC Sierra pickup with only 6,500 miles on it. Your transmission failed, and now your truck has been at the dealer for over 60 days.

Matheus Picceli, a proud owner of a 2024 GMC Sierra SLT 5.3-liter 1500 5.3-liter with a 10-speed transmission, shared his story of a failed transmission on the GMC Sierra Owner's Facebook page. His experience is not unique, as many other 2024 GMC Sierra and 2024 Chevrolet Silverado owners are facing similar issues.

He says, "My 2024 GMC Sierra SLT 5.3L V8 (6,500 miles) has been waiting on transmission parts for over 60 days. I've filed a claim through BBB Autoline, but GM is delaying the process."

"I'm reaching out to see if anyone knows about a class-action lawsuit related to the 10-speed transmission."

This Is Not An Isolated Problem

I recently wrote a report on a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado owner with a failed 10-speed transmission with only 11K miles. Check out Rachel's frustrating story here. She was on a road trip when her transmission failed, leaving her stranded in the middle of nowhere.

What are Other GMC Sierra Owners Saying?

Katie Szymanski - The same thing happened to me; on January 9, 2025, I towed the truck to the dealership. I have a 2024 GMC 1500 SLE 5.3-liter V8. I have only owned the truck since August 2024, with under 10,000 miles on the truck.

Transmission Valve body failure, NO ETA for a replacement valve body, today is 2/25/2025 Nothing! So pissed with GM, I filed a case with GM that's not doing anything to help me, filed with the highway safety administration.

Adam Cummings - GM is not delaying the process. Parts are not available. The last valve body I ordered for a 10-speed took almost 2 months to come. They are shipping as fast as they can build them, and there is basically a waiting list.

Dale Helmick - My 2019 Sierra 106,000 miles is headed back in for the 5th time. It's my 4th torque converter, and now something else is vibrating, and on top of that, a cylinder gasket is leaking oil. If you buy a used one, make sure you pick up the extended warranty!

Marty Sica - I keep telling you guys there is a recall on both transmissions! I got my letter months ago and brought it to the dealer. They updated and reprogrammed it, covering it for 6 years and 150k. I have a 2021 3500 Silverado High Country Duramax! Check into it.

General Motors Issues a Recall

In November 2024, the NHTSA and GM issued a recall for the 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks; however, the recall only involved vehicles equipped with diesel engines, not the 5.3-liter V8.

GM faces a class action lawsuit over defective transmissions.

The problem is so bad that General Motors faces a class action lawsuit alleging the company knowingly sold several hundred thousand vehicles with defective transmissions.

The lawsuit covers approximately 800,000 vehicles manufactured from 2015 through 2019, 514,000 of which are in the certified classes.

Did GM fix the transmission problems in 2020 and the newer Silverado and Sierra trucks?

Reports say that newer models like the 2020 and 2021 Sierra and Silverado with the 10L80 transmission have also been subject to similar issues, indicating that the problems persist despite GM's attempts to address them.

According to discussions on Reddit, there are reports of transmission issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and Sierra, with users mentioning problems like torque converter failures, "blown valve bodies," and concerns about the transmission running too hot, leading to potential premature wear and tear, particularly when towing heavy loads. Some users even claim these issues are frequent enough to warrant other potential class action lawsuits against GM.

GM knows there is a problem, but they don't have the parts to fix the transmissions.

On the GMC Sierra Facebook owner page, AC says that GM made his payments, and the dealer gave him a brand new Traverse High Country to drive for 8 months. "It literally was a truck for sale on the lot and had plastic still on seats," he said.

GMC told him, "We are experiencing a delay on parts needed to repair your 2021 Chevrolet Silverado. We understand this is a significant inconvenience, and we will continue to work diligently to resolve the delay."

Final Thoughts and Questions For Silverado and Sierra Truck Owners

General Motors has not fixed the problem with the 2024 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado truck transmissions.

To make the problem worse, GM doesn't have the parts to fix the transmissions, so customers like Matheus will have to wait months for their new trucks to be fixed.

My 2022 Sierra’s transmission went out at 40,256 miles in early February 2025. The Dealer told me the Valve Body needed to be replaced and not to expect my repair to be completed until June 2025. I asked why they couldn’t get me a valve body or a complete transmission when they’re still rolling new trucks out of the factory every day? I got no reply to my question. I waist they would expand the class action suit to include 2022 trucks.

I suspect GM has an overall part issue. I have a 2023 Canyon. My brakes failed and after 2 separate visit to the dealership, I'm finally told that is a defective chip. I'm now at 30 days waiting with no end in sight because the part is backordered... It looks like GM is unable to fulfill is warranty obligations.

I have a 2023 and two 2024 the transmission failed on the 2023 just under warranty and I waited, if I recall correctly, two months. Now the 2024 3500 dually transmission has thrown codes for the second time. The first time less than two months ago. I think they cleared the codes and now they are back and it it’s something to do with the transmission. I need these trucks for work and they are under contract for work. I’m waiting for the third truck to start with the transmission nightmare next. At first the truck indicated it was not in park although I shifted the lever to the park position.

2023 silverado 1500 5.3 with 10 speed transmission failed 27800 miles. Local dealers have 3 plus months backlog for repairs. No loaner until vehical is inspected 2 to 3 months. Local transmission shop rebuild 2.5 weeks. $7430.00. Torgue convertor likely cause problem.

My 2024 Silverado has been at the dealership for a month waiting for transmission valve body. It has a little over 11,too miles on it. I'm not a happy camper. Is there anything I can expect from GM for the loss of my truck?

I have a 2024 GMC Sierra with 6100 miles. 3 times it runs at reduced engine speed and the transmission shifts really rough. Also wouldn’t go into reverse. Dealers says parts are ordered and it’s been over a week. Truck is not driveable. I drive long distances for work and afraid now even after if/when fixed it will be reliable. BTW switched from a RAM that I never had one problem with.

I have a 2019 GMC SIERRA with 50,000 miles on it. The transmission is starting to slip when shifting. Was this vehicle on a recall?

Jody Vega (not verified)    March 2, 2025 - 10:50PM

Same problem valve body. Thankfully my truck didn't die on me. As soon as it started acting up I drove to the dealership. Happened right before Thanksgiving got my truck back by the end of January I believe.

Having trouble with my 2015 gmc sierra. 5.3 literally 8 cylinder.
Shifts hard. I assume it's Torque converter. Should've been a recall

Have a 2024 Silverado 2500 with 6.6 gas and 10 speed... Needed a new transmission at 1100 miles. Truck was out of commission for 2 months, had several trips planed towing the camper and had to use a 1/2 ton rental, so I beat the Sh** out of that.

Scott Hagg (not verified)    March 3, 2025 - 1:36PM

I have a 2019 Sierra with 55,000 miles on it. I took my truck to my dealership in the first 2 months of ownership because of a slipping of the gears then clunking into gear causing a slight whiplash. I was told that was normal. I continued taking it back to them on numerous ocasions. One time they decided the problem could be fixed by recalibration. Told me the transmission needed to relearn my driving habits to shift properly. Now I was the owner since day one of truck and my habits have never changed ??? Another time they told me the computer was confused most likely because others were driving the vehicle, I laughed my ass of knowing I was the only one that had ever driven my truck. Bottom line they know there is a huge issue and it would cost a lot of money to fix, so they continue to delay you, counting on all 800,000 owners to go away, selling their trucks to unknowing buyers that have no rights.

I have owned General Motors products for better than 40 years. But my last one just went away. We had an 18 Sierra that we loved it had all the options until 40,000 miles when the torque converter to shake. We took it to Mechanic and for 10 weeks he worked to find even Parts. He couldn’t even find a rebuilt transmission from Jasper. By the time I traded it in the tour converter was ready to implode. The people who bought it, brought it back the next day saying there was transmission issues. I used to like General Motors, no more

John zitkewicz (not verified)    March 3, 2025 - 2:49PM

I have the same issue transmission. In a 2021. Silverado, they've had my truck for going on 3 months March 9th will make 3 months, he told me there was a nationwide back order on the valve body in the transmission.
Have no clue on when they'll get another one.

I have a 2022 gmc denali. We are currently waiting for the second valve body. The first one blew 60,000 kms. The second one blew with 140,000 kms it been two months the vehicle has been at the dealership and no answer in site.
It's frustrating , I expect more from a vehicle costing 100,000.00 dollars. We had switched over from Ford. Drove Ford from 2004 till 2022. When we went into the dealership the sales manager asked if we were tired of walking. We have been walking for 2 months curtesy of gm. Time to go back to Ford. We never walked this long driving a Ford!!!!!

I'm a long time GM/Chevrolet customer, having bought a 1999,2002,2007, and a 2016 Chevy Silverado, all are running great to this day, EXCEPT the 2016 truck, transmission went out at 94300 miles , costing me over $6000 dollars, after a lot of research I have come to the conclusion that GM new the 6 speed ( mine) and the 8 speed transmissions are junk! Trying to join 6 speed class action lawsuit,if anyone can help, please let me know!I will never buy another GM product, that you can count on!!

I purchased a 2019 Sierra in Oct 2019, fast forward to 2024, truck had 75,000 miles on it, started experiencing hard jerks, shuddering and slippage of the transmission..took it to dealership under 100k powertrain warranty and they replaced torque converter, had it back literally 2 weeks and started experiencing same problem, this time I was told the valve body had serious damage by debris in the system, they replaced main harness along with other repair, vehicle yet again experienced slippage and hot transmission temp, took it to another dealer and had to wait for GM valve body, with no ETA as when part would be available…was in the shop from January 2024- June 2024 before we got it back. The warranty company refused to approve a new transmission even though dealership stated it would be best option. Once the vehicle was retuned, I was told I would probably still experience problem because you can’t get all the metal debris out of the system, I drove it straight to another dealership and traded it in for a Ford. Will never buy GM again. I was told there is a class action lawsuit which I’d love to get further information about.

I have a 2024 GMC Sierra Denali equipped with the Duramax. In 6 months of ownership, I've had the truck in and out of the dealership MANY times with dozens of issues involving multiple systems, most recently last week. One commen issue during each visit involves the transmission; rough shifting (especially between 1st and 2nd gear), hanging in gear, and not shifting. At highway speeds, if you coast when coming up on slower traffic, then reaccellerate back up to speed, noisy, chattering vibration occurs. Transmission issues are frequent but intermittent, and of course all dealers "cannot replicate the issue", so no (alleged) issue found. The overall quality of craftsmanship and components of the truck is abysmal. Problems started the day after purchase. Hands down, the most expensive and ABSOLUTE WORST QUALITY vehicle I've ever owned. And I've even owned German sports sedans for comparison. These transmission issues are right in line with the quality of all other systems - poor at best.

Purchased a CPO 2022 Chevrolet used with 20100 miles in Sept.'24. Mar 2, 2025 check engine light came on with the message "service transmission soon: vehicle will not be able to shift soon." I had it towed to.my nearest dealer.(which is 50 miles away.) Today 3/4/25 I was informed that the transmission part that they need on on backorder from GM and that it is expected to be in 4-6 weeks. They are telling me they will provide a rental vehicle until my truck is fixed because it is a warranty issue. Hoping the part comes in sooner but I doubt it.

Bypass the thermostat on the transmission. Looks like a cylinder with two lines going in on the driver side. Kit is available on Amazon. Had the same problem and after the transmission got cold it worked again and that's what made me think. It's all a money making scheme from GM.

My neighbor Bob Maxwell has a 2021 GMC Sierra X31 with 5.3 V8, which just had the torque converter fail and the NJ dealer replaced it, charging Bob Maxwell approximately $1,800 for labor, which I believe is outrageous given this article and should be refunded.

My 2024 GMC Sierra Pro transmission stopped working on January 26, 2024. Truck could not go in reverse and in drive wouldn’t go faster than 5 mph. The dealership has had the vehicle since January 27. I was told the part is on back order with no date of delivery. They gave me a rental vehicle a GMC terrain, not a truck like I bought because I need a truck. I opened up a case with GM and they keep giving me the run around that they are monitoring my case and will update me when they hear anything on the part being shipped. I need a truck and my brand new truck only had 9,400 miles on it and it is now been over a month and my truck is sitting there. GMC needs to make this right at this point reimburse me the full amount of my truck plus the amount I spent for a bed liner and let me go purchase a truck that works.

I have a 2022 GMC Silverado evolution has 40,000 miles on it it's at two recalls and now the OnStar module has gone out and they're telling me it between $800 and $1,000 to get that fixed just waiting for him to tell me the transmission needs to be fixed too
