Another GM 10-speed transmission bites the dust.
Imagine owning a new GMC Sierra pickup with only 6,500 miles on it. Your transmission failed, and now your truck has been at the dealer for over 60 days.
Matheus Picceli, a proud owner of a 2024 GMC Sierra SLT 5.3-liter 1500 5.3-liter with a 10-speed transmission, shared his story of a failed transmission on the GMC Sierra Owner's Facebook page. His experience is not unique, as many other 2024 GMC Sierra and 2024 Chevrolet Silverado owners are facing similar issues.
He says, "My 2024 GMC Sierra SLT 5.3L V8 (6,500 miles) has been waiting on transmission parts for over 60 days. I've filed a claim through BBB Autoline, but GM is delaying the process."
"I'm reaching out to see if anyone knows about a class-action lawsuit related to the 10-speed transmission."
This Is Not An Isolated Problem
I recently wrote a report on a 2024 Chevrolet Silverado owner with a failed 10-speed transmission with only 11K miles. Check out Rachel's frustrating story here. She was on a road trip when her transmission failed, leaving her stranded in the middle of nowhere.
What are Other GMC Sierra Owners Saying?
Katie Szymanski - The same thing happened to me; on January 9, 2025, I towed the truck to the dealership. I have a 2024 GMC 1500 SLE 5.3-liter V8. I have only owned the truck since August 2024, with under 10,000 miles on the truck.
Transmission Valve body failure, NO ETA for a replacement valve body, today is 2/25/2025 Nothing! So pissed with GM, I filed a case with GM that's not doing anything to help me, filed with the highway safety administration.
Adam Cummings - GM is not delaying the process. Parts are not available. The last valve body I ordered for a 10-speed took almost 2 months to come. They are shipping as fast as they can build them, and there is basically a waiting list.
Dale Helmick - My 2019 Sierra 106,000 miles is headed back in for the 5th time. It's my 4th torque converter, and now something else is vibrating, and on top of that, a cylinder gasket is leaking oil. If you buy a used one, make sure you pick up the extended warranty!
Marty Sica - I keep telling you guys there is a recall on both transmissions! I got my letter months ago and brought it to the dealer. They updated and reprogrammed it, covering it for 6 years and 150k. I have a 2021 3500 Silverado High Country Duramax! Check into it.
General Motors Issues a Recall
In November 2024, the NHTSA and GM issued a recall for the 2020-2022 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks; however, the recall only involved vehicles equipped with diesel engines, not the 5.3-liter V8.
GM faces a class action lawsuit over defective transmissions.
The problem is so bad that General Motors faces a class action lawsuit alleging the company knowingly sold several hundred thousand vehicles with defective transmissions.
The lawsuit covers approximately 800,000 vehicles manufactured from 2015 through 2019, 514,000 of which are in the certified classes.
Did GM fix the transmission problems in 2020 and the newer Silverado and Sierra trucks?
Reports say that newer models like the 2020 and 2021 Sierra and Silverado with the 10L80 transmission have also been subject to similar issues, indicating that the problems persist despite GM's attempts to address them.
According to discussions on Reddit, there are reports of transmission issues with the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado and Sierra, with users mentioning problems like torque converter failures, "blown valve bodies," and concerns about the transmission running too hot, leading to potential premature wear and tear, particularly when towing heavy loads. Some users even claim these issues are frequent enough to warrant other potential class action lawsuits against GM.
GM knows there is a problem, but they don't have the parts to fix the transmissions.
On the GMC Sierra Facebook owner page, AC says that GM made his payments, and the dealer gave him a brand new Traverse High Country to drive for 8 months. "It literally was a truck for sale on the lot and had plastic still on seats," he said.
GMC told him, "We are experiencing a delay on parts needed to repair your 2021 Chevrolet Silverado. We understand this is a significant inconvenience, and we will continue to work diligently to resolve the delay."
Final Thoughts and Questions For Silverado and Sierra Truck Owners
General Motors has not fixed the problem with the 2024 GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado truck transmissions.
To make the problem worse, GM doesn't have the parts to fix the transmissions, so customers like Matheus will have to wait months for their new trucks to be fixed.

Bought a 2024 GMC Sierra one year ago. It has around 12,000 miles. It has been at the dealer in Lee Summit Missouri for almost a month. It needs the valve body replaced. I'm being told the part is in high demand and they are not sure when they can get one.

I have a 2017 Gmc 5.3 v8 6 speed with 120000 km and have been having issues for the past year or so. Shifting hard, jerking here and there. Still driving it not knowing when it's going to quit! Took it to the dealer and they
said it was the torque converter should be replaced and said it's just as well to replace the transmission as it was labor intensive to do the converter and recommended a full replacement at my cost as the warranty had recenty expired. Upset over this i told them to pound sand and left. I have been driving it since. Plan to drive it till it dies.

2023 GMC at4 diesel. Transmission went out at 32,0000 miles they replaced it with a new transmission and it went out at 64000 miles. GM said it would be at least 8 months for a repair or replacement. I had to trade it for a different truck. Obviously not a GMC. So I lost money on trading a truck in with no transmission. I filed a claim with GM and it's been over a month with no answer. Had 2022 GMC 3500 that was in shop all the time also. Never buying gm again

I have a 2023 GMC Sierra 3.0 Duramax that is currently experiencing transmission failure and is sitting at the dealership. This truck was a commercial purchase intended for daily business services for my company. Unfortunately, just three days after driving it off the lot, the truck stopped working. Each time I was in a different town for work, it had to be towed to a local dealer. After several attempts to diagnose the issue, it was determined that a faulty brake cylinder needed to be replaced. I am considering taking legal action and would appreciate any advice on how to proceed. If anyone has filed a law suit against GM, please share with me. I live in Ontario, Canada.

Got 2023 1500 slt 20700 miles and has been shuttering since almost new. Took to the dealer and said it was valve body in transmission. Was in shop for (over) three months. They did give me something to drive and both automobiles where almost new. Got truck back and it seems to be doing fine. Gm has a huge problem. Not good.

I bought a brand new 2024 Silverado with 11 miles on it. It is currently at the dealership for the same issue, transmission control valve, 10,042 miles. I was told no ETA on part, national backorder, and to expect waiting 2-6 months. When I dropped it off almost a month ago there were 8,500 on backorder. I spoke to them a couple days ago and there were 6,100 on backorder. I did contact GM customer service and started a "work order/ claim ticket" but that's gotten absolutely nowhere.

I have the a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 with 5.3L and 10 speed transmission we took delivery August 2024. The truck just had its first oil change and service late February 2025. I am pretty sure I’m noticing some “slipping” when it starts and when it shifts gears. It’s not as smooth as some previous vehicles I’ve owned.

2024 Sierra 1500 5.3L wouldn't go into reverse and shift out of 1st gear. Took to dealer waiting 2 weeks no rental reimbursement or anything. Said valve body needs replacement. Parts are on order. I had a 2018 Elevation 1500 Sierra with slipping transmission so I thought a 2024 would fix the issue. I'm very disappointed at GM. My father worked 35 years at Flint michigan plant and this is the service I get. I'm a loyal GM fan but not so much now.

Bought my 2024 GMC Sierra 5.3 in April 2024. On December 23,2024 my transmission refused to switch to reverse and would only operate in drive at low speeds(possibly unto 4Speed). I drove at low speed to GM dealer and has been there since. Today is March 9,2025. Truck only had 14k on it. Every time the dealer calls for an update, which is every 2 weeks, there is no update and no eta on the arrival of the part (Valve body). At least they are supplying a rental truck-2025 Ram

I picked up my brand new 2024 GMC 2500 heavy duty pick up. I ordered it new from the factory. It arrived after about three months. It was about a 20 mile drive home and the transmission was acting up before I got home. It went back to the shop and it took about two months for them to get the new valve body. I do a lot of traveling to a large fifth wheel and I’m always worried about this transmission and having a breakdown when I am away from home.

Bought a used 2019 Silverado in December of 2023. Had it for month before I started experiencing the jerking with every gear change. Took it back to them they said they ran some kind of program on it and that it would act a little funny at first but eventually smooth out. Well it only got worse and now it has been sitting at the dealership for over a month waiting on a back ordered transmission with no ETA. Meanwhile I still have to make payments on top of having to pay for alternative transportation to work. The worst part about it is being stuck in this situation and not being able to do anything about it while Chevrolet was fully aware of these issues. Will never buy or even recommend any Chevrolet to anyone.

I own a 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 5.3L with 13,300 miles on it. Initially, the truck would randomly not go into reverse, yet the check engine light would not come on. I took it to a couple of different dealers, and because no indicator light was on, they said there was nothing they could do. Finally, on Christmas Day 2024, the truck would not go into reverse, so I pushed it out of the parking spot and drove down the road. Within a quarter-mile, it slipped out of drive and went into reduced power mode, with the check engine light coming on. I then took the truck to the service department at a different dealer, and it has been there ever since. I was told that it was the transmission control valve. The part has been ordered, but there is no ETA for its availability.

2021 GMC Sierra 1500 V8 Double cab 65,000 miles. Noticed the truck did slight shudder every now and then on highway upon sudden acceleration. Found out thru mechanic friends of recent transmission recall. Called GM Customer care. Have a claim # Said my vin is not part of recall. But have dealer check truck out. Today dealer calls says my truck needs Needs Torque converter and a valve body replacement. $3921. Dealer said they contacted GM and they want to split the cost So I would have to pay $1960. And two years warranty. Doesn’t sound right. Going to call back GM care center and demand them paying for all of it. Why isn’t GM adding more trucks to this major recall issue. How good will my truck be after they replace these two parts? She’s been a great truck.

Check with Next Gen Diesel for a possible fix to GM’s faulty 10 speed transmissions. Often when the valve bodies go, they take the torque converter with them. A nextgen valve body and new torque converter should permanently solve your problems.
